Incentive - January 2008 - (Page 6)

JANUARY 2008 www.incentivemag.com EDITOR’S NOTE California Dreamin’ ecember was SITE month. It began with the ISITE Classic 2007, the main fundraising event for the Society of Incentive and Travel Executives’ research and education foundation, and was followed by the main SITE International Conference both in Monterey, Calif. Hot on the heels of the two national events, the Southern California chapter of SITE had its own annual two-day charity event on the 11th and 12th. It seemed like the This is work: Jennifer Juergens with local mariachi band whole incentive industry was in California in Morelia on the final night at SITE International December. ISITE was the inaugural charity event for the Inter-national SITE Foundation. It incorporated golf and lifestyle events like a cooking class at the Culinary Center of Monterey and an art gallery tour in Carmel. I may not have shot my best score, but I had the chance to play golf with an incentive house exec and a corporate buyer who gave me some insights about incentives in the food industry. At the international conference, I talked to so many people that I have story ideas for the next six months. I got to meet Patricia Kerr, with Manulife Financial and the director of the FICP (Financial & Insurance Conference Planners) for 2008, who talked about the programs she planned last year. I met Carolyn Burns Bass who has a network of SITE members on Facebook. Now I’m on it too. I even have pictures of me in golf garb. Others enjoyed it, too. “The SITE 2007 Conference in Monterey with over 450 attendee’s was absolutely a true incentive quality program,” says Patrick Sullivan, presdient of PRA Destination Management New York. “Monterey outdid themselves and proved that a destination can showcase their attributes as an Incentive Destination!” Even though these events are considered work, there was certainly plenty of opportunity for networking and fun. Jeanie Casison’s cover story on page 14 will give you some ideas on how AT&T combines meetings and incentives without diluting either. It stands to reason when you have all the best and brightest together, you want to take full advantage. At the SITE International Conference, educational sessions included: corporate responsibility, work/life balance, motivating the millennials and leadership. Of course, there was a session that included a bit of the green. As in going green, which all are in favor of, but exactly how much? Read Bruce Tepper’s “My Turn” column on page 32 and tell us what you think. And to all our readers, if you have an idea for a column, give me a call. I’d love to hear from you. I just didn’t do enough networking last month. Enjoy the issue.
