FEBR UARY 2008 www.incentivemag.com EDITOR’S NOTE The Sporting Life Editorial and Executive Offices 770 Broadway, New York, NY 10003-9595 (646) 654-4500, Fax (646) 654-7650 Group Publisher Daniel J. Corcoran EDITORIAL (646) 654-4500 Editor in Chief Jennifer Juergens Senior Editor Leo Jakobson Managing Editor Alex Palmer Associate Editor Anne Marie D. Lee Contributing Editor Julie Barker Editor at Large Jeanie Casison Special Projects Director Karen Gines Research Director Nancy Lazarus Online Editor Stacy Straczynski W hen we recently set up a photo shoot with Archie Manning, who was on his way to speak to a JPMorgan group, we just wanted to talk to him about sports figures as motivational speakers. But with all the hoopla surrounding his son, Eli, and the NY Giants (at press time the Super Bowl was a week away), I’m sorry we didn’t get the chance to see how Archie was feeling about his son’s upcoming game. “We’ll be nervous for him, but very excited,” Archie Manning said in a New York Post article. “Grateful he’s getting that opportunity.” And, you can bet, no matter how the Giants do, Archie’s stock as a speaker will go up. Says Robert Tuchman, president of New York– based TSE Sports and Entertainment, “There is no doubt that Archie Manning has been kept in the spotlight by the success of both Peyton and Eli. With Eli taking the Giants to the Super Bowl in 2008, Archie will be catapulted even more into the national spotlight. He is not only considered a legend himself but someone who has raised extremely successful sons who are both bright and humble. Editor In Chief Jennifer Juergens was not watching football on this particular Sunday, choosing to pose at His track record proves he knows how to create a ski resort, Killington in Vermont positive outcome. That is something incentive and event planners are always looking for when they hire talent.” Check out the list of sporting events throughout the year (see pg. 20) to see if anything might work for your group. Remember, employees who get to go to coveted sporting events will have bragging rights for years to come. Just in case you’re not that into touchdowns, home runs, aces or goals, read the Incentive Interview on pg. 28 with Jim Avery. It is inspiring. He actually did play football in high school, but his claim to fame is rising in the ranks at Exxon when it was a rarity to see an African-American in management. Julie Barker’s employee empowerment story on pg. 34 will have you thinking about entrusting your employees with the keys to the office, so to speak. Think about ways to give them more responsibility and you’ll most likely be pleasantly surprised. Enjoy the issue.
