AWARDS ELECTRONICS Pump Up The Volume By Ben Chapman Examining the latest high-end audio L ike many people, Mark Kramer’s a picky listener. “I hate bad sound,” says the senior merchandising manager at Maritz Motivation in St. Louis. “I really do.” That’s something Kramer has in common with growing numbers of incentive participants, who are choosing to upgrade their home audio systems with high-end equipment. Whether to enhance simplicity, style, wireless systems or iPod integration, there’s plenty of growth and development across audio electronics, especially at the high end of the sector. “It’s a strong, stable category,” Kramer says. “Audio electronics are maintaining their cachet, even if they’re not experiencing the explosive growth of some other electronics. Manufacturers continue to improve the technology and change styles, which keeps consumers interested.” Bolstered by emerging technologies, consumer electronics account for about 70 percent of reward redemptions, according Dana Slockbower, director of marketing at Pine Brook, N.J.–based Rymax Inc. “Buyer behavior shows that people are still more interested in technology than anything else,” Slockbower says. Audio products are a key segment within the larger electronics sector, so it’s important to understand the trends that are driving the category.
