Guest Column golf games and contests add fun By Phil Immordino ost golfers are not avid golfers. They don’t take the game too seriously. Games and contests will add fun for some who think 18 holes and five hours is too long. Here are some tips on how your golf event can build memories and excitement. M STRAIGHTEST DRIVE: Draw a long chalk line down a long straight fairway with a marker for the golfer’s name. The golfer who hits his ball the longest and closest to the line wins. CLOSEST TO THE PIN, “GREENIE:” This contest is the closest shot to the pin on a par 3 hole. A marker is placed on the green for the golfer’s name. The golfer that hits it closest for the day is the winner. You may want to place a measuring tape on the green for the ones that are very close. LONG PUTT: The long putt contest can be on any green. Place a measuring tape and a marker so that golfers can measure the longest putt. SHORTEST DRIVE: This is a tough one to monitor and is more of a gag prize. Ask around to see if anyone can report the shortest drive and give them a prize. LONGEST DRIVE CONTEST: Choose a straight long hole; designate it as the long drive contest hole. Golfers will attempt to hit their longest drive on this hole. A marker is placed in the fairway to designate the distance of their drive as long as lands in the fairway. The golfer with the longest drive of the day wins a prize. You can have more than one winner. We recommend two men and two women. Celebrating the score with new friends after a great round of golf.
