TRAVEL CITYCENTER CHANGES THE LANDSCAPE OF THE LAS VEGAS STRIP By William Ng n its history, the Las Vegas Strip has seen a number of groundbreaking properties. But none were as ambitious as MGM Mirage’s new CityCenter, which finally opened in December, bringing a triad of luxury hotels, a high-end casino, 300,000 square feet of meeting space, and a gargantuan retail, dining, MULTI-HOTEL AND and entertainment ENTERTAINMENT HUB lineup. Taking five years to build at a cost of $8.5 billion, CityCenter is a city-within-a-city on 67 acres of Strip land, employing 12,000 workers and running its own passenger tram. Sprawled between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo resorts, it is already being marketed as the new icon of Las Vegas, with six sculpted glass skyscrapers and futuristic architecture and landscapes designed by a cadre of renowned architects, such as Pelli Clarke Pelli. On opening day, MGM Mirage CEO Jim Murren declared, “We wanted a central gathering place for Las Vegas. We believe Las Vegas is a better place today, a different place.” Anticipation built for months preceding the 18-million-squarefoot district’s debut, as city officials looked to it as a beacon that could get the city out of a dark business period.
