Profile Those familiar with Gioi Tran’s sleek, contemporary designs may be surprised to learn that he considers himself a “traditionalist” in terms of personal taste. In fact, the cofounder and principal of San Francisco-based Tran Applegate Interiors finds “comfort in items that have a sense of history.” But then again, Tran prides himself on his ability to be fluid with his ideas, which eliminates “any constraints that get in the way of creativity,” he said. “Concepts and ideas come quite naturally to me, so all I have to do is get them down on paper.” This flexibility has served him well. Not Q&A Gioi Tran, TRAN APPLEGATE INTERIORS only does his work appear regularly in a variety of publications, including K+BB, Better Homes and Gardens and California Homes, Tran is the recipient of numerous national and regional awards from the NKBA and ASID. A passionate believer in educating consumers and nurturing young talent, he speaks frequently at industry events and lectures on design at the Academy of Art University and the University of California at Berkeley’s Extension program. Although his firm specializes in residential projects, it has also undertaken commercial spaces, as well as furniture design. If someone had asked you when you were a child, “What do you want to be when you grow up,” you would have answered… As a child, I wanted to be a painter and, in my teens, an architect. What learning experience has had the most impact on you? Gardening, because it requires planning and patience. What’s the biggest misconception about what you do? That the process is quick and easy—what we do for one client can be easily adapted to another client. What “words of wisdom” can/do you share with others? Your design ideas are not so precious that they can’t be changed to accommodate clients’ taste levels, budget constraints, structural components and other challenges. I have learned so much by staying flexible and fluid with my ideas until finalizing and committing to a concept. What is the most intriguing aspect of your job? Business and product development. What do you hate about it? Managing people. Are there any examples of architecture that motivate you to design? Some of the typical homes I’ve seen while walking through the streets of Prague, Paris, Saigon, Antigua and Florence. What is the best thing that has happened to the profession in the past five years? More consumers are educated in the process of design, resulting in more qualified prospects. Do you derive any ideas from nature or other disciplines? Traveling has provided me with the best inspiration not just for design ideas but also my approach to design and business opportunities. Who are your role models? Currently, my business and life partner Vernon Applegate. I also learned a lot from my last job and my former employer Mike Tatro. Do you have any professional pet peeves? Competitiveness and an unwillingness to share ideas with others. When you walk into a kitchen or bath you didn’t design, what do you tend to notice first? The flow and layout of the space, as well as the appliances. I also notice the execution of the design details. Tell us about your favorite/ideal customer. An ideal customer is someone who has a budget that meets their expectations. Educated and sophisticated in their taste level, they recognize your strengths and allow themselves to trust you as a professional. What’s the one thing you hope to accomplish in your lifetime that you haven’t yet? Being a father. If you could have a five-minute conversation with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why? Leonardo da Vinci. He was a true Renaissance man and visionary who could see into the future. s —Alice Liao For more of this interview, go to www.kbbonline.com/Tran. 52 + K BB October July 2004 2008 / www.kbbonline.com / The Official Sponsor of K/BIS www.kbis.com http://www.kbbonline.com/Tran http://www.kbbonline.com http://www.kbis.com
