Publisher’s Note VOL. 56, NO. 9 DESIGN + INNOV TION + LIFESTYLE / October 2009 A EDITORIAL Community Activity Recently, K+BB presented a webinar on Universal Design, along with designer Jamie Goldberg and Dean DePhillips, of Safety Tubs. It’s a compelling topic because of the inclusiveness it necessarily entails and its timeliness, and I admire those designers who incorporate it into their practice. There’s also a sense of inclusiveness inherent in green design. After all, designing a green kitchen and bath is about ensuring the health and wellbeing of not only those who live in the home, but also the rest of us and, of course, the earth. An underpinning of sustainable design suggests a connectivity between all people, as well as all generations, even those that have yet to be born. I bring this up because this is our green issue. However, as this has been a challenging year for our industry (and again, we are all connected), we were unable to include a dedicated section of articles on sustainable kitchen and bath design. So we did the next best thing, which was to “green” what content we have. In addition, we will be posting articles about eco-friendly kitchen and bath design, products and issues throughout this month at www.kbbonline.com. First up is a piece by Barbara Higgens, executive director of the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute (PMI), who will fill you in on everything you should know about California’s low-lead plumbing standard, which goes into effect next year. Other stories will follow, but check back daily, as the site is updated each and every day. And speaking of updates, stay tuned for a new and improved look to our site, which is scheduled to debut later this month. Finally, with connectivity comes a feeling of community. And as part of that community, K+BB is aware of some of the difﬁculties many k & b professionals have experienced this year, which is why the magazine has teamed up with CompanionCabinet LLC to offer the “Sales Innovation Series—The Designers Edge,” a two-day course that aims to provide those in the cabinety industry with an effective sales process. The response to our inaugural Chicago sessions was overwhelmingly positive.
