SEAMLESS UNDERMOUNT Editor’s Note In the Groove My father is an architect and my grandfather was a contractor who built ofﬁce and government buildings in Taiwan. LOW PROFILE TOP MOUNT Consequently, I often wonder if it’s some genetic predisposition that makes my heart beat a little faster whenever I’m in Chicago. The city is architecturally stunning. Granted, much of my time there has been spent indoors, but from the few walks I’ve had a chance to take and what I’ve glimpsed from buses and cabs, I’ve felt something—something that I know stems directly from the city’s buildings and their details, the bridges and streets, and the way in which all are laid out and “groove” together. It reminds me of something designer Doug Durbin once said in an interview I did when I ﬁrst started on K+BB. Although he was talking about luxury design, I think his words apply to design in general—that, after all is said and done, successful design is really a “visceral experience.” Naturally, I have Chicago on the brain now because of all the KBIS-related invites and press releases that have started to flood my mailbox. While Las Vegas and Atlanta each possess their own appeal, there’s something particularly invigorating and “right” about a design-related show being held in a city where design is so palpable. Needless to say, those of you who will be attending KBIS will be working—as will we—and most of us will have little chance to take in all the sights and sounds Chicago has to offer. But I’m sure those products primed to launch at this year’s outing will provide much to satisfy both visually and, well, “viscerally.” Of course, Sallie and I will be covering the show, scoping out the latest product and design trends, as well as blogging from the show floor (or our hotel rooms at the end of the day). In addition, if all goes well, we may even get a post or two on the goings on “across the pond” at Eurocucina. I say all of this as a kind of backdoor introduction to our new blog, K+BB Collective: The Designers’ Corner, which went live this month. As I mentioned in my welcome post, our blog has been a long time coming, but we’re excited that it has ﬁnally launched and even more thrilled about the stellar group of design and industry professionals who have graciously agreed to contribute their valuable insight, experience, wisdom and, of course, time.
