EDITOR'S NOTE Change Is Good I've been hearing some interesting things in the kitchen and bath industry from my recent conversations with designers and dealers, and one message seems to ring true with most. Clients - especially those from younger generations - don't just want change; they want change sooner. Recent quotes from industry experts I've been privy to include: * Gone are the days when you buy a sofa because it will last 20 years. * Change is so relevant to younger clients because they do not want that permanence. * People who have just finished school and are starting careers do not want what their parents had/have. * These people are not buying for long term when their cell phones are obsolete six months later. As a 42-year-old, I don't really consider myself one of the "younger generations," but I do see the value in change - maybe just not as often. Last year, I actually did buy a couch that would last a long time - it even has the stuffing in it that doesn't dip down when you sit in the same place on it every day. That doesn't mean I am planning to keep it for 10 years, but I definitely don't need to make a change every six months. I believe I was the last of my friends to get a smartphone, too, but now I know I couldn't function without it. Another "change trend" I am seeing - and this isn't necessarily from any specific generation - is that at least in the U.S., homeowners are moving away from heavy traditional looks to more transitional designs. And more than once have I heard an industry professional tsk-tsk the functional triangle in kitchen design, as it seems that's not what all clients are into anymore. No matter what kind of look and function a homeowner wants in their bathroom or kitchen, it still rings true that they need help finding a balance between what they want and what they need. In this age of social media and the ability to see thousands of design photos on sites like Pinterest and Houzz, people tend to get flooded with images quickly and need help sorting those out. "People want to tell a story about their design experience, and it is our job as designers to match the best design to their personal story," said Cheryl Draa, a designer and one of our judges for the 2013 Product Innovator Awards. "We can help them tell their story, and they will spend money to tell it properly." Draa and three other judges chose a mix of winning products (page 19) in the kitchen and bath industry this year - innovative, functional and aesthetic products that will surely cater to generations from Y's to boomers. We added a "Judge's Choice" category this year so that each judge could include an additional favorite out of the mix. We hope you enjoy seeing and learning about the winning products, and please feel free to let me know your favorites, too. n Chelsie Butler, Executive Editor chelsie.butler@emeraldexpo.com DESIGN + INNOV TION + LIFESTYLE / November/December 2013 A EDITORIAL executive editor | Chelsie Butler 1145 Sanctuary Parkway Suite 355, Alpharetta GA 30009 (770) 291-5425 chelsie.butler@emeraldexpo.com art director | Wendi Van Eldik (770) 291-5520 wendi.vaneldik@emeraldexpo.com Graphic desiGner | Denise Fields (770) 291-5487 denise.fields@emeraldexpo.com INDUSTRY WATCH eNewsletter Nichole Schulze naschulze@yahoo.com editorial advisory board Kate Bailey; Jeff Burton; Paul Cottle; Kristina Crestin; Sabrina DaLomba; Bill Feinberg; Pamela Goldstein, cmkbd, caps, allied asid; David Hagney; Cathy Osborne; William Roquemore; Toni Sabatino; Phil Seaton; Ebony Stephenson; David Stimmel SUPPORT production director | Nan McDowell (770) 291-5480 nan.mcdowell@emeraldexpo.com production ManaGer | Terri Hill (770) 291-5481 terri.hill@emeraldexpo.com reprints Rosie Hassell The YGS Group (800) 501-9571 Ext. 136 kbb@theYGSgroup.com circulation custoMer service (800) 697-8859; Fax: (847) 291-8416 nkb@omeda.com list rental Contact your Territory Manager or: Wayne Nagrowski (845) 201-5318 wayne.nagrowski@reachmarketing.com publisher Natasha Selhi 6800 Jericho Turnpike Suite #100E, Syosset, NY 11791 (516) 682-6030 natasha.selhi@emeraldexpo.com TERRITORY MANAGERS MidWest John Wilson (215) 497-0221 john.wilson@emeraldexpo.com east coast Paul Bienkowski (860) 644-3861; FAX: (860) 644-0700 pbienkowski@cox.net Phil Viscidi (781) 431-1320; FAX: (781) 431-1968 phil@viscidi.com Liliana Connolly (781) 431-1320; M: (781) 492-1509 lil@viscidi.com West coast and southWest Larry Shore (562) 598-5560 larry.shore@emeraldexpo.com classiFieds and special sections Diane Kennedy 1145 Sanctuary Parkway Suite #355, Alpharetta, GA 30009 (770) 291-5519 diane.kennedy@emeraldexpo.com vice president/content Doug Hope (770) 291-5453 doug.hope@emeraldexpo.com vp kitchen and bath Group Brian Pagel 1145 Sanctuary Parkway, Suite #355, Alpharetta, GA 30009 (770) 291-5438 brian.pagel@emeraldexpo.com senior vice president Joe Randall joe.randall@emeraldexpo.com david loechner CEO, Emerald Expositions eileen deady Vice President, Human Resources denise bashem Vice President, Finance lori Jenks Vice President, Operations darrell denny Senior Vice Presdent Business Development teresa reilly Vice President, Digital Joanne Wheatley Vice President, Manufacturing & Marketing Services the official sponsor of Circle No. 7 Copyright © 2013 by Emerald Expositions.
