NEWH - August 2006 - (Page 26)
new beginnings
by Nancy Bohnett
This Spring, most chapters of
NEWH in the United States, Canada
and the UK completed their scholarship selections for the next academic year. Every Chapter reviews each
applicant for: financial need of
financial aid, maintaining a high
GPA, providing personal and professional recommendations and a
personal essay sharing their direction in the industry and participating
participation in NEWH. Chapters
continue to provide professional
development, industry fundraising
and networking sessions to help
gain monetary advancement for the
growth of their scholarships each
year. In the recent years, many firms
in the recent years have supported
company scholarships to promote
corporate charity, awareness and
support for our next generation in
business.
NEWH continues to provide outreach in the industry, both within
and outside of the workplace.
Members consistently act as
mentors to maintain and attract
incoming talent to the industry. The
long list of prominent, award- winning, passionate and devoted professionals share membership kudos
to those scholarship awardees that
enter the industry with a “leg up.”
As our industry is challenged currently with concentrated schedules,
diminishing budgets, greater
responsibilities and higher expectation from the guest, time and talent
is a valued resource.
Ontario, Canada’s first scholarship
award in 2005 went to Teri Venzon,
a woman who faced challenges of
time, finances, and balancing her
responsibilities as a working mother.
Teri is a mother of two daughters,
20 and 24, that are also in college,
and a 12- year- old son. Her degree
26
was the one thing missing from her
credentials as successful industry
leader.
Teri’s background shares her focus
on food and beverage, front desk
and customer relations. Teri was
working full time with managing,
training, and hiring banquet staff for
catering companies. Her experience
allowed her to develop a course
called Professional Server and
Etiquette which she shared with a
non-profit organization called
Niagara
Women’s
Enterprise
Centre. The centre focused on
preparing women in the social service sector and multi cultural centers
to become servers in restaurants
and banquet facilities.
This course was the stepping stone
to Teri’s career, offering Niagara
College with a degree in
Hospitality, a first in an Ontario college. Ontario was the last providence to have Grade 13 as a prerequisite for a university or a degree.
Before this, only universities offered
degrees. The school allowed her to
start her first year with no entrance
fee, since she had no money or
credit to fullfill the financial obligations. The first year was almost her
last.
Teri found out about NEWH, and
completed the application not
knowing how the outcome would
affect her life-long dream and the
ability to continue to share her passion with others. At the time, Teri
was working as a full-time front desk
supervisor at a Days Inn property in
Niagara Falls, attending school and
taking care of her son. The scholarship went to help support financial
needs at school, while furthering her
knowledge, talents, and credits
toward her degree.
Non-profit organizations allowed
Teri to become more interactive
with the industry, while exposing
her to other aspects of the industry.
Teri’s recent position in corporate
sales, she believes could not have
been possible without the most
recent training. In teaching a
night class of banquet servers with
of 20 graduates during the evening
hours, opened additional doors and
long-term relationships for her and
her graduates. Teri’s continues her
support of non-profits with the
International Women’s Day committee for WARM (Women’s Addiction
Recovery Mediation), a small
organization in Niagara. In her spare
time, she assists the past graduates of her course for placement
with local caterers and fundraising
conventions.
Teri believes that all her success and
ability to continue schooling her
education would never have been
possible without NEWH’s ongoing
support and scholarship. NEWH recognizes the importance of hospitality to Teri, and she hopes to continue to support the mission and vision
of the organization. Teri was
extremely inspired by the members
of the chapter and is very proud
and thankful to be the first receipt
for the award in 2005.
