No matter which room you are in— a hotel guestroom, spa treatment room, or private dining area in a restaurant— some form of illumination surrounds you. It could be full of color, an LED hanging above, or some form of decorative lighting on the wall. Whichever type it is, lighting is a valuable part of design and choosing just the right luminaries could make or break the mood of the space. Where to Start Choosing the right lighting begins with knowledge. “Specifiers need to become more knowledgeable about lighting and the manufacturing process,” explains Rick Feinberg, executive director of sales for the hospitality and contract division of Quoizel, Inc. Especially when it comes to creating custom products—a growing trend. To help solve some of the confusion, iWORKS introduced its own solution, a CEU-accredited class dedicated to educating the design community on the difficulties of custom lighting. “Since 90 percent of what we produce is 20 june 2009 www.newh.org tel 800.593.NEWH custom, it seems that different challenges come up on a weekly basis,” says Jeff Luchonok, president of iWORKS. Another challenge, as with any project or product specification, is setting and sticking to the budget. “Understanding the budget—if someone will give you one—then taking that budget and beginning a lighting design you feel is as sophisticated as it can get within that budget [is a challenge],” says Andy Lang of Dallas-based Lang Lighting. Sy Henenberg of Contract Lighting Sales, a company that represents 12 lines of manufacturers, agrees. “We find our greatest challenge is providing a lamp or lighting fixture that a designer has selected from a website, a residential high-end shelter magazine, or other visual source, while maintaining a cost that will fit a budget.” Other noted challenges include meeting UL codes and delivering the product on time. After those hurdles, other choices lie ahead. For custom designs, designers and manufacturers work closely to go over concepts, materials, and finishes. > http://www.newh.org
