partner profiles Milliken Hospitality manufactures broadloom and modular carpet tile for all segments of the hospitality market. In addition to its award-winning portfolio of standard designs and industry leading Quick Ship program, Milliken Hospitality focuses on making the process of custom carpet design easy and fast. The company has created a kit of carpet design tools to ease the designer through the custom process. The program is focused around the award-winning étage layered design technology. Using étage, designers can combine different layers of pattern, add and subtract design elements, and easily change colors. The design online étage website (www.etage.milliken.com) further eases the process. Another vital tool in the Custom Made Easy toolbox is the Pure Color system, a box of 1360 colors that offers designers unlimited color, while simplifying the process of choosing and communicating their choices. Milliken thrives on customer input and creative feedback and in 2010, the company continued to connect with its customers through the Milliken Hospitality Design Council. Comprised of 15 hospitality industry specialists, the design council gives feedback on product development concepts, industry trends, and design tools. The company has also just opened anew floorcovering design and marketing facility at its corporate headquarters in Spartanburg, South Carolina. On the site of a former peach orchard, and now a registered Arboretum, this state of the art design studio and customer center will provide a welcoming environment for the Milliken Hospitality business and its customers as it enters an exciting new phase of growth and embarks upon a new design direction. Other important new developments at Milliken include a variety of new construction types and an expanded choice of products for public spaces and guestrooms. Recent introductions include CYP for public spaces as well as solution dyed tufted products and modular carpet tile for guestrooms. Under the new business leadership of Bill Blackstock (Milliken Hospitality business manager) and creative leadership of Barbara Haaksma (vice president of design and marketing), Milliken continues to be proud of its affiliation with NEWH and looks forward to welcoming members to the new South Carolina design studio. Durkan is pleased to introduce several new guestroom carpet collections from the Merit line. Introduced at HD Expo, the On the Runway Collection was an immediate hit and award winner, receiving an award from the IIDA/HD Product Design Competition. This collection is a unique offering of larger scale MLCL patterns, with 25 stylish patterns and a 12-color palette. The three styles include Work it Baby, a wave-like stripe pattern, Glam it Up, a damask inspired transitional design, and Strike a Pose, a contemporary geometric pattern. This collection is part of the company’s new program MeritFlex, a large collection of patterns with a distinctive color palette, which allows designers to place orders with lower minimums than typical custom programs. Soon to come, other new MeritFlex collections—EcoSense, EcoSense Stripe, and TriOmbre. This past spring, Durkan partnered with NEWH on its first annual D*SCOVER Design Competition, with the winners announced at HD Expo. The competition was open to current or new NEWH members, both student and professional. “Our partnership with NEWH on this new endeavor was a win-win for both of us,” says Lee Blair, senior vice president of sales for Durkan. “We helped drive new membership for NEWH and received some excellent design entries that will be developed into marketable collections.” The winning designs can be seen on the Durkan website and are now available as printed carpet collections called Blathanna by Karen Bradley the professional winner, and Hydroflection Emily Riebkes, the student winner. This will continue as an annual competition. Fabricut Contract is the premier textile company for the hospitality industry, providing solutions to everyday specifications.
