partner profiles Durkan Hospitality “It’s encouraging to see the rebound in our market of hospitality after more than two years of downfall,” says Lee Blair, Durkan’s senior vice president. “The revamping of our CYP technology has resulted in enormous growth of the platform.” For 2012, Durkan is focused on global growth and its parent company, Mohawk, is also committed to increasing its global footprint. In fact, Blair has been named the global leader for hospitality for Mohawk worldwide. “I will be focusing on tying together our domestic hospitality efforts with the global hospitality markets,” he says. In terms of products, “We are taking a strong look at our color offerings and will expand and renew them as color drives design. Also, we are focusing on new textures in both rooms and public space offerings,” Blair says. The carpet company’s patent-pending Synthesis technology, which marries texture and pattern, has become very popular. Next up: “In the winter, we will be launching our new, state-of-the-art, 25DPI patterning equipment. The technology provides us nearly three times the level of resolution of current capabilities.” As for NEWH, “During good times, NEWH is often the impetus that provides nice social networking events along with building the bridges for our future design talent to cross over. More recently, during the downswing, NEWH has brought many of us together to strategize on weathering the storm, to help out those in need, and to continue to work together to sustain the scholarship funds needed to provide educational assistance for the up and coming future of design. We at Durkan are very proud of our long association with NEWH and always stand ready and willing to support the initiatives of the organization.” Milliken Reflecting a growing demand for designs featuring depth and dimension through textures, this year Milliken introduced a collection of new multi-level, textured bases called Inspired Textures. “We’ve explored different and unique textures to offer collections that inspire,” explains Bill Blackstock, Milliken’s business manager, hospitality, adding that other new collections include Nobedan and Apsley House, and next up is a Designer Series collection, which will bring new designs to the market on a monthly basis. “For 2012, we will continue to expand layered technologies and further creative solutions for hospitality applications where creative/performance demands are high.” Milliken also recently unveiled a new corporate identity, a new microsite (www.inspiredinspiring.com), and a new booth at the 2011 Hospitality Design Exposition & Exposition (HD Expo). “The booth was designed in a way we could communicate the inspiration behind new product development, as well as illustrate how textures—when layered with great visuals—create intriguing dimensional products,” he says. “Open to the public, the site shares images—art, fashion, nature, or anything that represents where designers get inspiration. “Respected industry associations such as NEWH enhance collaborative efforts on a global scale. This allows Milliken to engage with a variety of hospitality community members, identify emerging trends and share best practices. Through networking opportunities, events, and educational opportunities, NEWH brings the hospitality community together, while challenging each other to be better. This leads to creating new aesthetic products for hospitality environments that are yet to be conceived and explored.” Hospitality Design Group/Nielsen Expositions Hospitality Design and its parent company Nielsen Expositions continue to link buyers and sellers through various tradeshows, conferences, products, services, and awards. Those include: Hospitality Design (HD) magazine, published 10 times a year, which is the premier trade magazine serving the field of hospitality design. HD continues its 30-plus-year mission to publish the accomplishments of various design teams that collaborate to bring the most innovative examples of new construction and renovation to the industry. Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo), the preeminent tradeshow for the hospitality design industry, which will be held May 15-17, 2012, at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. HD Summit is an exclusive invitation-only conference where top executives in the hospitality design industry gather to exchange visions and ideas for the future, hone their leadership skills, and connect with their industry peers. The 2012 Summit takes place February 29-March 2 at the Breakers Palm Beach, Florida. The Hospitality Design Boutique Exposition & Conference (HD Boutique) is happening September 13-14th in Miami Beach. Conference highlights include keynoter Tony Chi and the 10th annual Wave of the Future celebration. HD also hosts multiple competitions including the annual HD Awards, and smaller events like CitySCENE: Next Generation Networking, designed to connect the younger decision makers in eight cities a year. “HD has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with NEWH that has allowed us to help support their hard work and commitment to our industry and most notably to our young designers,” says Nielsen’s group show director, Elizabeth Sommerville. “Through their tireless efforts, they have managed to touch many lives and enhance the world of hospitality in a very positive way. HD will continue to support them in any way we can.” Thanking NEWH’s 2011 Corporate Partners benefactor: DURKAN HOSPITALITY – ULSTER patron: BRINTONS – THE HOSPITALITY DESIGN GROUP/NIELSEN BUSINESS MEDIA – MILLIKEN CARPET/HOSPITALITY supporting: AMERICAN ATELIER, INC. – AMERICAN LEATHER – ASTORIA IMPORTS/COMPASS ORIGINALS – B CARPET - ELECTRIC MIRROR – FABRICUT CONTRACT/ S.
