sustainability competition Three renderings of Cone Mills Spa and Salon, the winning submission of the 2010 NEWH Sustainable Design Competition. student solutions udging is underway for the 2011 NEWH Sustainable Design Competition, sponsored by JLF/lone meadow and Designtex. Now in its fifth year, the award challenges students to showcase their design skills while thinking about and applying sustainability around a certain theme. This year’s competition asks students for the “Sustainable Guest Experience”— to communicate the sustainable story of a guest stay in a resort hotel from the perspective of the guest. The winning project—selected by a panel of top hospitality professionals including Richard J. Macri, design director, Gensler; Grace Machado McClurg, Judging is underway for the fifth annual NEWH Sustainable Design Competition J < Last year’s winner was NEWH Sunshine Chapter member Kathleen (Kat) Hummel from the International Academy of Design and Technology in Orlando. Her project, Cone Mills Spa and Salon, was selected as the best sustainable spa. designer, WATG; and Adrienne Pumphrey, brand global head, Adoba Eco Hotel & Suites—will be honored during Green Day, held in conjunction with the Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas in May. Both the student and his/her school receive a scholarship: a $5000 JLF/lone meadow award to the student, and a $5000 Designtex award to the school (two years ago, the two companies pledged $40,000 to continue the program). Last year’s winner was NEWH Sunshine Chapter member Kathleen (Kat) Hummel from the International Academy of Design and Technology in Orlando. Her project, Cone Mills Spa and Salon, was selected as the best sustainable spa by Jean Dusek Klueter, senior associate director of spa and wellness design, WATG; Todd-Avery Lenahan, principal, ABA Design Studio; and Katarina Tesarova, senior project manager, MGM Mirage. Other past award categories include a sustainable restaurant/club and timeshare/resort.
