news newh and chapter a vision in giving back NEWH, Inc.—The Hospitality Industry Network will be the first-ever recipient of Hospitality Design (HD) magazine’s Visionary Award. The honor was bestowed to the organization at the magazine’s annual Platinum Circle Gala, held during the 2011 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas in May. “The HD Visionary Award has been established to honor those who have dedicated themselves to giving back to and enhancing the hospitality industry,” explains Michael Adams, editor in chief of HD. “NEWH has been chosen for the first award by virtue of their 27 years of leadership, generosity, education, and business development. The hospitality industry would not be the cohesive and influential force it is today without their influence.” “NEWH has been such a strong supporting organization for this industry and has achieved so much through its student programs and networking opportunities, that this award is truly well earned and deserved,” says Liz Sommerville, group show director of Nielsen Expositions, which produces HD Expo. “NEWH is thrilled to be the first recipient of this prestigious award!” says Shelia Lohmiller, NEWH’s executive director and one of its co-founders, noting that to date, NEWH boasts 20 chapters and two regional areas, 4,000 members, and has given out $2,345,329 in scholarships. “It has taken many people to reach the point of success we are at today. With our volunteer membership and industry supporters, there are no limits to where we can take this fabulous industry.” CHAPTER Dallas The chapter has been busy. It hosted a tour of Saint Ann, once the first school for Hispanics in Dallas, now a multi-use restaurant space. In May, the chapter held its annual Scholarship Dinner at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre/ Rehearsal Hall and Enloe Terrace in the Dallas Arts District. The theme of the evening was the “Evolution of a Successful Designer,” featured keynote speakers Mike Moore and Jan Showers, and included the presentation of this year’s scholarships totaling $20,000. The chapter has also implemented the “Board Buddy” system, devised to help make new members feel welcome with a mentor. Los Angeles The chapter held a membership drive in the Phyllis Morris Showroom in February; a Sundowner event at Il Moro Restaurant/Wine Bar; plans to attend six job fairs at local design schools throughout the year; and in June, the chapter will host the regional tradeshow at the Hilton Universal City, with an after party themed “Hollywood Hot Summer Night,” complete with a DJ, entertainment slideshow, and a photo booth. North Central In 2010, the chapter held its first speedmentoring event, a spin-off of the speed-dating concept. The format gave students five minutes to speak to each mentor, arranged so that each student was able to talk to people in different fields. This year at the chapter’s 2nd Annual Speed Mentoring event, Fluid Interiors hosted more than 80 students and designers, and the chapter presented its two student scholarships. Sunshine Chapter In honor of Earth Day, the chapter’s sustainable committee hosted a tour in March of the new Amway Center, home of the Orlando Magic, the first NBA facility to earn LEED certification.
