Sustainability Conference Recap Greening the Way he NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Committee provided a successful series of sustainability programming for the 2012 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas in May. The luncheon titled Green Voice: NEWH Student Scholarship Awards Luncheon & Green Panel Discussion by the Experts featured a diverse panel: moderator David Mahood, Olive Hospitality Consulting/Olive Designs; Hervé Houdre, regional director of operations and GM, InterContinental Hotel New York Barclay; Kathryn Fernholz, executive director, Dovetail Partners, a forest certification and resource management auditor, lecturer, and adviser; Jeanne Varney, lecturer, Cornell School of Hotel Management, and principal, Olive Hospitality Consulting; and Susan Inglis, executive director, Sustainable Furnishings Council, an international sustainability consultant and sustainable product developer. The discussion was lively and covered topics ranging from forest management and wood selection, to strategies in promoting green products. During the luncheon, two students were awarded the NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Design scholarship award, sponsored by JLF/lone meadow (a founding From top: Andrea Thomas, sponsor) and Valley Forge NEWH; Brittany Swingley and Fabrics. This year’s theme: “The Julie Perkins, Art Institute of Sustainable Guest Experience” Las Vegas; Nitya Krishnan, with the story being told from New York School of Interior the perspective of the guest. The graduate student winner was Houdre, and Kathryn Nitya Krishnan, who is getting her Fernholz; and one of the Green Talks between Inglis master’s in sustainable interior and Jillian VanDresser, environment at the New York School of Interior Design, for her VanDresser Group. project, Kranina, an eco resort located in Thekkady, Kerala, India. A sincere thanks to the judges: Deidre Schwartz, American Hotel Register Company; Lora Spran, Walt Disney World Company; and Christine Geronaga, Gensler.
