NEWH - Fall 2012 - (Page 4)

News It Takes Two Some 10 years ago, Hospitality Design magazine launched Owners’ Roundtable at Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo), its version of speed dating for designers, architects, manufacturers, purchasers, and brand executives, and today it’s one of the most successful events at the annual show. Now, HD is partnering with NEWH, Inc. to bring this event to the nonpro t’s Regional Tradeshows and Leadership Conference. “It’s a great partnership because it gives NEWH more exposure to the owner and hotel community,” says Shelia Lohmiller, NEWH, Inc.’s executive director. “Attendees get one-on-one time with the owners to discuss what’s going on in the hospitality community today. You get to hear it from the people who run the show.” The New York chapter held a successful event in June (see recap on page 39), where 19 executives from some of the top hotel, REIT, investment, and management companies—from Starwood and Kimpton to Northwood Hospitality and Trump—“hosted” tables, rotating every 10 minutes, where they discussed the industry, what they were working on, and elded questions from the more than 150 attendees. Next up: an Owners’ Roundtable in Dallas during the chapter’s Regional Tradeshow on October 18th, and another roundtable will headline the Leadership Conference in San Francisco, January 25-26th. “This will obviously bene t the members just by giving them the opportunity to meet these decision makers, bringing more people from the A&D and purchasing community to the tradeshows,” says Lohmiller. Adds Elizabeth Sommerville, HD Group’s show director: “We are so excited to be able to work with NEWH who we have a wonderful relationship with. The Owners’ Roundtable is such a great opportunity to network and the more opportunities we can give, the better.” ❙❘❚ Around the Chapters Atlantic City/Philadelphia The chapter is putting on a Product Runway fundraising event on October 25th at Tendenza in Philadelphia, hosted by Jeff Devlin, star of DIY Network’s I Hate My Bath and Good, Better…Best. North Central Houston The Houston chapter is planning multiple events for the fall. On September 18th, there will be a designer series social, featuring Lisa Roth, Montgomery Roth; Bingo in the Heights will take place on October 16th; on November 27th is a night dedicated to uncovering art in the industry dubbed Exposed; and on December 18th, James Doolittle, a certi ed hospitality accountant, will discuss “What nance feels like from the renovation and design projects,” and there will be a HFTP/HITEC toy drive. In February, the chapter hosted its third annual speed mentoring event. Taking cues from speed dating, students had a set time frame to ask each design professional everything and anything that they want to know about the design industry. The students saw a variety of design professionals from various elds during the event, and got the opportunity to network before and after the event Rocky Mountain Los Angeles Founding The chapter would like to acknowledge its three 2012 scholarship honorees: Lewis Kary, who is studying culinary arts and hospitality management at Pikes Peak Community College; Carrie Zwisler, an interior design student at Colorado State University; and Shannen Ferreira McKean, who is studying interior design at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD). The chapter is having its second membership drive, which has been wrapped into a “Retro Bowling Extravaganza.” Vendors can choose from three levels of sponsorship, Spare, Strike, or Turkey, which includes a team of ve bowlers and one, two, or three memberships. Prizes will be awarded for best high score, team spirit, and classic bowling shirt. San Francisco New York On October 13th, the San Francisco Bay Area will be holding its annual fundraising event: Wine By Design. This year the chapter will be taking charter buses to Napa Valley for a restaurant tour, vineyard lunch, a grape stomp, and of course wine tasting. To inquire about sponsorship opportunities, please contact Leigh Mitchell at leighmitchell@mza-usa.com. The New York chapter is gearing up for its fall fundraiser, a version of Taste of New York. Held on November 12th during IHMRS and BDNY, the night will consist of multiple chefs offering a taste of their signature dishes, mixologist bars, raffles, and of course, music and networking. Sponsorships will be set by September 15th; if interested, email Stacy Shoemaker Rauen at sshoemaker@ hdmag.com. And on October 23rd, the chapter will host a scholarship event, honoring its nine 2012 honorees, for a total of $25,000 in aid. Washington DC Metro Members’ pets will be featured in a calendar to be sold starting October 1st at the chapter’s annual golf tournament, and proceeds will go to the local pet shelter. Also, the chapter congratulates the winners of its 2012 NEWH Get Social 2.0 contest: Liliana Rios, Architecture + Design Associates, Inc. (grand prize, iPad2); Bonnie Kogad, Art Source L.A. Inc. (portable hard drive storage); and Renee Golding, Golding Design Solutions and Jennifer Whalen, Choice Hotels International (complementary membership). ❙❘❚ 4 www.newh.org http://www.newh.org
