News Asian Expansion? Are you interested in an NEWH chapter in Hong Kong, Shanghai, or Singapore… let’s talk at HD Asia. June 18-20th, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong www.hdasiaconference.com Around the Chapters New York Besides launching its first newsletter, getting ready for the NEWH New York Regional Tradeshow—with the Battle of the Urban Artist graffiti showdown and Hospitality Design magazine’s Owners’ Roundtable on June 22nd—the chapter has launched a new social media campaign called New York Photo Diaries. A single photograph submitted by a member that captures the essence of the city will be selected on a monthly basis to be displayed as the chapter’s Facebook cover photo of the month. The campaign has already proven to be a great success in its first month generating a wealth of images, Facebook discussion, and emails while celebrating some of the amazing scenes and talents that help make New York such a wonderful place to be. The first monthly winner, Mika Denny from Mandy Li Collection, has been selected for her vivid photograph depicting some of the faces of New York. Her work, as well as subsequent winners, will be displayed as part of the chapter’s November “Toast of New York” event. Left Coast Lead South Florida In March, the chapter held a luncheon and panel discussion themed “So Many Shades of Green,” at the Hotel Sofitel Miami. Panelists included: Denaye Hinds of OBM International; Brian Lomel of TLC Engineering for Architecture; Brian Scheinblum of Cambean Hospitality; and JoAnn Shearer of Florida Green Lodging. Guests enjoyed a three-course meal while being educated through a lively interactive discourse about the complexities of various sustainable hospitality rating systems. On May 1st, the chapter presented its 2012 scholarship recipients at Miami Culinary Institute’s TUYO restaurant, where attendees were treated to a tour and listened to legendary chef Norman Van Aken. Next up: a tour of the new Marriott MET, a membership drive, and a bowling bash. “The 2011 Leadership Conference was met with such enthusiasm and glowing reviews, that the 2013 conference is being anticipated with a great deal of optimism and excitement,” says Mark Huntsinger, NEWH Inc.’s director of leadership conferences. “The bar was set pretty high, but I know we can produce a conference in 2013 that will be even better.” The conference (themed “Bridge to Success”) will take place at the Grand Hyatt Union Square in San Francisco, January 25-26th. Highlights of the two-day event include: keynote speaker Chip Conley, founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, now Commune Hotels, and a well-respected author and speaker; a panel discussion on “maintaining a sense of style in a tough economy” led by Bob Puccini and Robert Polacek of the Puccini Group; a fast-paced industry forecast with Glenn Haussman of Hotel Interactive and Bruce Ford of Lodging Econometrics; an Executive’s Forum, a table discussion with industry leaders; a panel looking at “What’s the Trend” in hospitality design and furnishings; a wine workshop teaching attendees how to select wine in a business dinner setting; an iPad for Business workshop, intended to give practical tips and tricks to get the most productivity in the design and supply world; and the Scholar’s Reception and NEWH Leadership Awards at the iconic Sir Francis Drake hotel. Says Huntsinger: “The business landscape has changed fundamentally; tomorrow’s environment will be different, but no less rich in possibilities for those who are prepared. Our objective is to help the attendees (and everyone in the organization) become better prepared for the new normal.” ❙❘❚ Washington DC Metro In April, the chapter kicked-off ‘Get SOCIAL: NEWH 2.0,’ a campaign to encourage member engagement in the chapter’s social networks. LinkendIn and Facebook fans, who are also chapter members, will have a chance to win an iPad, portable data storage, and a free year of NEWH membership. The State of the Hospitality Industry (SOTHI) 2012 will be a dynamic moderated panel discussion, June 28th at the Bethesda, Maryland, Marriott (Pooks Hill). The panel will be challenged with answering the bonus question on everyone’s mind, ‘Just where DO we stand today?’ Also, save the date for the 2012 Golf Tournament, October 1st at the Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. ❙❘❚ 4 www.newh.org http://www.hdasiaconference.com http://www.hdasiaconference.com http://www.newh.org
