Project Omni Dallas Hotel Standout Omni’s newest captures the essence of Dallas By Joy Gettis Photography by Mark Knight or the new Omni Dallas Hotel, local firm Waldrop+Nichols Studio took inspiration from the dichotomy of the city of Dallas. “The city is blue jeans to ball gowns,” explains principal Andrea Waldrop. “[We also wanted to] contrast the modern exterior architecture with the warmth of the Omni brand.” Throughout the hotel’s public spaces (including restaurant Texas Spice) and 1,001 guestrooms and suites, the design team employed reflective glass mirrors, crystal sculptures suspended from the ceiling, contemporary leather wall panels paired with reused materials (brick and wood), a warm color palette, honed limestone, and bronze metal. The Trinity ballroom is dressed in a custom designed axminster carpet based on an interpretation of the city’s highway patterns as seen from an aerial view. Furniture is contemporary, upholstered in rich, inviting palettes such as topaz, sienna, and cayenne in contrasting textures such as mohair, leather, and metallics.   “The design is very tailored, inviting, and residential, which represents the quality and luxury of the Omni brand. Omni offers guests the opportunity to connect with the city of their stay, texan F and the customized art package of work by Dallas artists and artisans available for purchase in the boutique gift shop infuses local flavor,” says co-founding owner and partner Reggi Nichols. Design highlights? Nichols and Waldrop point to the wrap-around ribbon fireplace in the lobby lounge, the custom made crystal wire-mesh ceiling panels connecting the public space floors, the James Surl wall-mounted sculpture climbing three floors, and the embedded televisions within the guest bathroom mirrors. The challenge, though, was “creating a residential feel within a convention center hotel spanning 23 floors and totaling 1,001 guestrooms,” says Waldrop. Adds Nichols: “As with all projects the challenge was to inject the latest technology that is still current once the hotel opens two and a half years after it’s designed.” 〉〉〉 This and opposite page, clockwise from above: The swooping escalator on the second level of the Omni Dallas Hotel; the entry to the Owner’s Box, the hotel’s sports bar and restaurant; and a ribbon fireplace warms the lobby lounge. 42 www.newh.org http://www.newh.org
