Project NYLO Dallas South Side Texan Charm NYLO helps to revitalize Dallas’ South Side By Joy Gettis • Photography courtesy of 5G Studio W e strive to work with clients that have vision and like to think outside the box of traditional design—the NYLO Dallas South Side hotel exemplifies that,” explains Scott Lowe, managing partner and co-founder of local fi rm 5G Studio. Housed in a 100-year-old-plus red brick building, formerly the Dallas Coffi n Company and part of the industrial development of the city’s South Side, “it was important to keep its integrity and try to preserve and restore the original architectural elements,” says Lowe. “The South Side is turning into a really funky and eclectic part of the city. It is becoming a destination for dining, entertainment, and the arts.” With that in mind, Lowe and his team’s resulting aesthetic is “bold and swanky vintage with modern lines to accommodate the New York loft idea and quirkiness behind the NYLO brand, and [developer] Matthews Southwest’s love for the found object,” says 5G’s Tiff any Axner. Bright colors and fun materials mingle with vintage furniture and antique chandeliers. A graffiti covered pool table stands on concrete floors, while a wall done in red pops against a wood paneled wall and exposed ceilings. Wood paneling shows up again behind the bar and reception desk, and on the floor of rooftop Soda Bar (complete with a pool and fi repit), while Terrace Bistro restaurant has a decidedly French, feminine feel, with pendants that look like upside down tulips,. “The color scheme really complements the naturally warm tones of the building but also helps to ‘jeuje’ up the space by giving it a bit of glamour,” says Axner. And hundreds of pieces by local artists grace the walls, driving home a sense of place. “The largest challenge of this space was the historical value that came with it,” says Axner. “For example, the walls were practically untouchable and the level of time and detail that went in to reviving ‘what was’ to ‘what is’ is beyond belief.” 〉〉〉 Clockwise from left: The red brick façade of the NYLO Dallas South Side, once home to a coffi n company; the industrial reception area; and guests can enjoy heady city views from the hotel’s rooftop lounge, Soda Bar. 44 www.newh.org http://www.newh.org
