A ClOSE READING

The Fall/Winter edition of Perspective is typically our state of the industry issue. This time around we kept the panoptic scope—surveying topics as (seemingly) diverse as mentorship and intellectual property—but dove in deep to tease out unexpected threads between them. The result is less a status check on the profession than an attempt to capture something a bit more profound: a sense of the zeitgeist, really. The first article we started researching was one that perhaps changed most during the course of reporting: Jennifer Krichels Gorsche’s investigation of intellectualproperty issues that arise as interior designers expand their purview. With the new freedom that technology allows comes the responsibility to protect our practices from new risks. It turns out that, while our profession is at the forefront of the collaborative cross-disciplinary model, we’re lagging behind in properly safeguarding our ideas. Other articles likewise touched on how technology has proved a double-edged sword. Among the many gems from our interview with UCLA deputy librarian Dr. Susan Parker—a judge of this year’s IIDA/ALA Library Interior Design Award— was her insight into how digitization has helped and hindered the book-search process in a sort of zero-sum game. Technology has also had a major role in changes to the design and experience of library spaces—and not just because laptops, gadgets, and flat screens (and the tangle of cords that sometimes accompanies them) are now as omnipresent as tomes. As books are increasingly moved off-site, square footage is liberated for other uses; collaborative areas are fi lling that vacuum, and designers are playing a key role in how those spaces—and the project type in general—is evolving. Those changes have moved the library from a passive role in knowledge creation to a more active one; facilities become a participant in—rather than merely a container for—the acts of writing, learning, developing, and researching. It’s a compelling and exciting reminder that space itself can have agency—if, that is, we design them the right way. Two of our contributors are witnessing that firsthand: artist and architectural photographer Elizabeth Felicella, who shot all 215 branches of the New York Public Library, and Stephen Treffinger, who writes about the awardwinning McAllen Public Library in Texas (a former big-box store; how’s that for poetic justice?) from, yes, the comfort of one of the local libraries he considers his “home” office.
