Collaboration and creation are the twin themes that tie together this issue’s “What Clients Want” column. Wandering the halls of Chicago’s Merchandise Mart during NeoCon while conceptualizing this issue, we concluded that manufacturers would be a particularly rich client type to explore. David Sokol interviews top brands about working with interior designers to develop products. I wasn’t expecting this to be a controversial topic, but lo and behold, we uncovered a dirty secret that I’m curious to hear readers’ take on: the fact that interior designers are often unwilling to specify products conceived by their colleagues, feedback that’s been uncovered in focus groups. We turned up plenty of other eye-opening insights as well. Back to collaboration, David Whitemyer queried a handful of interior design firms to find out if their approach to mentorship has changed over the years. While the majority of companies embraced the value of mentoring relationships, there was a wide range in how they chose to nurture them. Some have structured programs in place, while others take a more relaxed attitude, oftentimes simply structuring their practice in a manner that encourages cross-experience partnerships to occur organically. The definition of mentorship is shifting too; it’s not just about developing the youngest professionals anymore, but about realizing that all practitioners need some degree of support as they progress on their career path. Indeed, navigating the tricky, complex, but exciting challenges that we face in the context of a shifting economy and a more digitized, socially mediated, and hyperlinked world depends on coming together to create the most inspired solutions. Luckily, interior designers are naturals at collaborating, sharing, and reaching outside the boundaries of the profession to realize big dreams. Read on to find out some of the inspired ways practitioners are doing just that.
