IIDA Perspective - Fall/Winter 2012 - 21

As technology and appearance become inextricably bound in the design world— think LED lighting, operable facades, or nano-enabled self-cleaning textiles—big names are finding new ways to gain competitive advantage. For example, global design and architecture giant HOK launched HOK Product Design three years ago to solicit concepts from members of its many offices. Though the spin-off has only one employee—Susan Grossinger, former director of interior design in HOK’s Los Angeles office—it’s launched more than 30 products and is developing dozens more in sectors ranging from health care to urban planning and fire safety. To date, the company has received three design patents and two utility patents. Research-based initiatives with academic institutions are also in the works.

A large fi rm like HOK has an advantage as it expands into product design: purchasing power. “Because we’re a huge specifier of products, it wouldn’t make sense for a rival manufacturer to copy something we’re making, since that would influence our buying with them,” says Grossinger. “No major manufacturer wants to be off HOK’s spec list.” Even venerable makers that have been around for decades are looking to expand their collaborations to produce original items. Take KnollTextiles. Though the brand has teamed with graphic designers, architects, and even fashion designers in its more than 65-year history, it is now beginning to work with other manufacturers and in new materials, such as its recent collection with glass producer Skyline Design. “Reaching outside our industry brings a fresh point of view and moves the design dialogue forward,” says KnollTextiles marketing director Colleen James.
