ThE BIGGER PICTURE

Another example of the 21st century’s rapidly emerging collaborative model is the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology, a Manhattan-based research initiative cohosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and SOM. The group focuses on creating next-generation building technology for sustainable urban environments. In a lecture earlier this year about CASE’s vision, its director—RPI professor of architecture Anna Dyson—explains that the group hopes to join forces with large companies to make its prototypes (technology for building-integrated solar facades, eco-ceramic building envelopes) into mass-manufactured systems suited to myriad environments. A major advantage of forming alliances, notes Dyson, is that large corporations are more able to defend systems that involve such a high degree of intellectual property.

A new book, Law for Architects: What You Need To Know by attorney Robert F. Herrmann, has gained attention in the design community since its May release. High praise for its content from the likes of Deborah Berke and Bernard Tschumi is another sign the profession is ready to catch up to the times. In fact, according to Herrmann, the U.S. on the whole is waking up to the importance of both protecting and promoting designs created here. It was less than three years ago that Victoria Espinel was appointed the inaugural Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator for the White House in belated recognition of the importance of intellectual property—and invention—to our economy. But while the design community is getting more legislative support, its greatest chance of creating successful collaborations that result in leading-edge work is by getting educated, together, about just what it means to innovate. A novel idea indeed.
