1. DaviD Whitemyer
With one foot in design and the other in journalism, David Whitemyer has a unique perspective on his subject matter—in this issue, mentorship. A registered architect with a specialization in exhibition planning, the Boston–based writer has served as project manager for the development and construction of exhibits at over a dozen major institutions, including the National Museum of the Marine Corps and the National Museum of the United States Army. He’s also the managing editor of PSMJ Resources, a company devoted to improving management and training in the design and engineering industries. You might think that his dual careers wouldn’t leave him much downtime, but Whitemyer, a father of two, is also an avid mountain hiker and woodworker. Recent read: “I just finished The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future. It was short but sweet.”

3. Jennifer k. GorSche
In this issue’s intellectual-property feature, Jennifer K. Gorsche untangles thorny legal issues surrounding the risks designers take on when collaborating with outsiders, from furniture fabricators to product manufacturers. The New York– based journalist, who edits Metals in Construction magazine, writes about products, digital fabrication, design, and architecture for various consumer and trade publications, including The Architect’s Newspaper and Interior Design. Previously she was editor of Concrete Homes and Texas Home & Living. Recent read: “Next to my bed is 10+1, edited by Hansjerg MaierAichen to celebrate the 11th year of Messe Frankfurt’s Talents program for young designers. (It may be sitting on top of a People magazine!)”

4. Stephen treffinGer
Stephen Treffinger has covered interiors, architecture, and technology for a veritable who’swho of design publications: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Architect’s Newspaper, The Financial Times, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Interior Design, and many others. The Brooklyn– based writer suffers from wanderlust, a condition that inspires him to travel as frequently—and as far away—as possible; recent trips have taken him to Sweden, Cameroon, and Tunisia. Closer-to-home adventures include visits to 15 branches of the New York Public Library system, where he frequently writes—making him the ideal person to cover the IIDA Award–winning McAllen Public Library in this issue’s “Design Decoded” column. Recent read: “Walks With Men by Ann Beattie.”

5. kimberly richter
As project manager of Perspective, Kimberly Richter helps keep us on schedule, and handles unsung minutiae that’s vital to the editorial process, like tracking down photo credits and merging mailing lists. It’s a little less glamorous than her day job: a design manager in the Branded Environments group at Perkins+Will Chicago, where she specializes in building integrated spaces and developing strategies that tell a client’s story. Richter’s flair for narrative comes courtesy of a background in entertainment, having worked for film-production company Ridley Scott Associates and HBO prior to earning her master’s in architecture (with an emphasis in interior architecture) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Recent read: “The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement by David Brooks.”

6. buD roDecker anD beth Weaver
This issue’s graphics—from the custom typefaces to the high-concept page layouts—were spearheaded by Bud Rodecker and Beth Weaver of the Chicago–based design collaborative 3st. Together, they’ve continued updating Perspective’s award-winning visuals to make the publication even more inspired and compelling. Both have serious design chops. Rodecker, who teaches typography at DePaul University, has had his experimental work represented in the Chicago Design Archive, Graphis, and several publications. Prior to receiving her MFA in graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design, Weaver double-majored in theatre design and Spanish studies at Butler University and received her interior design BFA from Harrington College of Design. Rodecker’s recent read: “I keep trying to read The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, but after the first page I get distracted and check Twitter.” Weaver’s recent read: “It Chooses You by Miranda July, which is about a lot more than just cats.”

2. DaviD Sokol
A contributing editor at Architectural Record, Cultured, Greensource, and Surface, who also writes regularly for Interior Design, David Sokol spends every waking minute thinking about design matters. (Or his next vintage furniture purchase.) In this issue, our “What Clients Want” columnist grills big-name product manufacturers about their collaborations with interior designers. Based in New York and Washington, DC, Sokol is the author of The Modern Architecture Pop-Up Book (Rizzoli) and is working on the second volume of Nordic Architects (Arvinius). Recent reads: “The Shape of Green: Aesthetics, Ecology, and Design by Lance Hosey; At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson; The Architecture of Happiness by Alain de Botton; National Endowment for the Arts: A History 1965-2008; and Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge.”
