THE pOWER Of CONNECTIONS How is it possible that there is ever less time to attain a work/life balance? With more tools to keep us connected, it seems absurd not to be able to manage it all. And yet, between board meetings, international travel, chapter events, strategy sessions, and the general chaos of everyday life, neither of us has enjoyed a weekend at home in, well, a long time. We recognize that change is not an event but a constant, daily happening. but embracing it is not always easy. in the words of Kimball office vp and General Manager Jeff Fenwick, who said one of our favorite quotes of the season: “now, more than ever, is a little bit like Whitewater. And not such a little bit.” Many of us belong to organizations and associations, and part of what we’re studying is just what it means to organize and to associate. iiDA focuses on advocacy, education, representation, and community. engendering community is the primary goal, no matter what your career stage. We’ve embraced new media both to engage our membership and to learn from nonmembers. there is great wisdom in crowds, who collaborate by sharing problems, opportunities, and knowledge. this has always been the case for associations, but with social media—and the opportunity to more easily reach across generations and geographic boundaries—we now enjoy immediate distribution of thoughts, theories, and innovations. interestingly, social­media vehicles represent everything we want our physical spaces to be: cheaper, easier, accessible, networked, shared, multidirectional, personal, professional. online and in person, virtually and concretely, those attributes are what iiDA represents. With this issue, we are excited to introduce a new Perspective team. Jen renzi takes over as editor. rick valicenti and bud rodecker of thirst lead the creative side. All three join publisher John rouse and the strong nielsen team to help us produce the best possible design journal. (We’re not the only ones who think Perspective rocks: We just won two eXceL Awards from Association Media & publishing.) We know this issue won’t disappoint.
