David Sokol A contributing editor at Architectural Record, Cultured, Greensource, and Surface as well as a regular contributor to Interior Design, David has logged an impressive amount of time in the trenches of design journalism. He pairs a scholarly understanding of his subject matter with a thrill for pursuing unexpected story angles, including the client’s perspective—thus making him the perfect writer to pen our “What Do clients Want?” feature. based in new York and Washington, Dc, David is the author of The Modern Architecture Pop-Up Book (rizzoli) and is working on the second volume of Nordic Architects (Arvinius). FAve App: “sitorsquat—a freelancer’s best friend.”

Jennifer K. Gorsche in this issue’s Mythbusters column, Jennifer grills four multidisciplinary designers about the pros and cons of crossing into genres outside their immediate expertise; true to form, her subjects were so busy that they proved tricky to pin down (but their insights were worth it). the Fort Worth–based writer is a polymath herself: in addition to writing about products, digital fabrication, design, and architecture for myriad consumer and trade publications, Jennifer is products editor at The Architect’s Newspaper and edits Metals in Construction magazine. previously she was editor of Concrete Homes and Texas Home & Living. FAve App: “evernote is great for organizing all the ideas i want to file away for later: story pitches, news articles, the name of that place in new orleans where i ate a really good oyster po’ boy...”

Kimberly Richter As project manager of Perspective, Kimberly helps keep us on schedule, and handles unsung minutiae that’s vital to the editorial process, like tracking down photo credits and merging mailing lists. it’s a little less glamorous than her day job: she’s a design manager in the branded environments group at perkins+Will chicago, where she specializes in building integrated spaces and dev eloping strategies that tell a client’s story. Kimberly’s yen for storytelling comes courtesy of a background in entertainment, having worked for ridley scott Associates and Hbo prior to earning her master’s in architec ture (with an emphasis in interior architecture) from the school of the Art institute of chicago. FAve App: “cooking apps like epicurious and Jamie oliver keep me wellfed.”

Bud Rodecker / 3st Graphic guru bud joins Perspective as the publication’s new designer. responsible for the look and feel of every page—including the illustra tions and custom fonts (read more about them below)—he tweaked our awardwinning design to make it even more navigable and engaging. bud works closely with rick valicenti and John pobojewski at the chicago based collaborative 3st. experimental and with an emphasis on typography, his work has been represented in the chicago Design Archive, Graphis, and several publications. He also teaches typography at the chicago portfolio school and lectures about design. FAve App: “Flipboard. it’s the most beautiful way to keep up on twitter, instagram, and all the blogs i follow.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

in viewpoints, on page 56, we asked interior designers to share a favorite app, so we thought it was only fair that contributors offered up theirs, too.

As per Perspective’s standard graphic format, this issue features illustrations that translate the editorial content into visual form. While in the past we’ve featured line drawings almost exclusively, here we shift to a more graphic presentation heavy on typographic treatments. turn to page 54 for indepth infor mation about the designs, from the floorplaninspired cover art to the verbal heat map in “What Do clients Want?” (page 25).

please recycle this journal or pass it on to a client, colleague, or design student.
