“the more broad you Can be, the more stable you are.”
LauREN ROTTET, fIIDa, faIa

WOuLD CLIENTS RaTHER WORK WITH a SpECIaLIST OR a fIRM THEy aLREaDy KNOW? DG: i think clients are looking for designers who have the expertise, but if the firm they like doesn’t have the expertise, then they look for someone who can organize the other trades around it. LR: We are designing cruise lines for viking and working with the ship architect. the request came from a project manager in L.A. who liked our portfolio. JS: even when a specialist is brought in, we find our clients looking to us for a recommendation to proceed. aB: We are in the process of studying paper management for a law firm. it’s a policy change for the client, but they are also trying to innovate a new work environment. We understood the concept, so we became the resource to suggest people for the next step—and how we might complement the process.

WHaT ISSuES CONCERN yOu WITH DESIGNERS TODay SEEKING TO BE aLL THINGS TO aLL CLIENTS? DG: Data centers and missioncritical projects require a body of knowledge that for most architects and designers is outside their realm. Data centers are so specific and so engineered that a slight oversight in those areas can be catastrophic for the project. LR: one scary trend is that contractors are not building what’s in the drawings. We’re having to ramp up our construction administration so that we’re comfortable with what’s being built. i think people are too hurried these days. JS: As our designs are able to be more structurally provocative, we do become concerned about what could go wrong. but we try not to let it become the overriding factor when we feel we have trust in the client. aB: consultants are really critical for us when it comes to A/v, it, and security. our teams are also specifically structured to make sure experts are current on energy standards. one of the biggest things to understand is materials and their applications in terms of health and safety issues. california usually starts the most restrictive use of materials; national clients need to adapt to that.
