Built in an age when a vast amount of information is now readily accessible online and traditional lecture-style teaching is lost on our shortened attention spans, the groundbreaking spaces documented here promote learning by inspiring us, providing us with helpful tools, and facilitating opportunities for productive cooperation and the exchange of ideas within groups. In short, the work presented in Learn for Life makes clear that the creative use of architecture and interior design not only provides a new physical framework for acquiring knowledge, but also revitalizes and advances the process of learning as a whole.

Learn for Life

Learn for Life is a diverse collection of inspiring architecture and interiors that support progressive models of acquiring knowledge. New interpretations of kindergartens, schools, universities, libraries, and educational centers are featured along with architecturally innovative offices, conference rooms, and laboratories. These examples are rounded out by more experimental projects or temporary installations that offer further perspectives on the rapidly evolving topic of how best to learn in the new millennium.

Design After Modernism: Furniture and Interiors 1970-2010 by Judith Gura W.W. norton & company, February 2012
new York school of interior Design professor Judith Gura surveys the evolution of furniture over the past four decades, a period that witnessed an explosion of new materials and technologies, a heightened culture of experimentation, and the rise of furniture as art form. she cogently traces the influences and inspirations behind genres such as postmodernism, high tech, and green design, couching them in the broader context of “modernism”—a term she redefines as an everevolving mindset versus a fi xedintime movement.

Learn for Life: New Architecture for New Learning edited by s. ehmann, s. borges, and r. Klanten Gestalten, February 2012
this is a timely book on a hotbutton topic. the editors have an excitingly broad definition of learning space, showcasing projects that range from a slovenian kindergarten to a parisian arts education studio, convention centers to conference rooms, and temporary art installations to play grounds. the inspiring, progressive designs featured plead the case that buildings aren’t just neutral envelopes in which education takes place, but have the capacity to shape how that learning occurs.

Live-Work Planning and Design: Zero-Commute Housing by thomas Dolan Wiley, April 2012
As technology continues to eradicate the boundary between home and office, designers are challenged to better integrate work and living space. Dolan— an architect, urban designer, and code consultant— has specialized in this project type for almost 15 years; he designed the country’s first purposebuilt livework complex. in addition to great visual fodder and indepth case studies, the book offers plenty of background: the author addresses ways in which municipalities have altered building codes and city plans to cater to this phenomenon, and reveals the myriad forms that “zero commute” can take, from soHo artists’ lofts to new urbanist “flexhouses.”

Concrete edited by William Hall, with an essay by Leonard Koren phaidon, March 2012
the ageold material gets its due with this book, which covers concrete’s diverse applications and styles. the 180 structures featured include examples from ancient rome to the present: a German skate park, Japanese crematorium, portuguese swimming pool, brazilian government building, chinese opera house—many by top names (Le corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Zaha Hadid, and Herzog & de Meuron among them). editor William Hall, who has a design practice in London, began his career working for John pawson, evident in the book’s minimalist design.
