THE pOWER Of DESIGN: THE EMpOWERED DESIGNER As you might have gathered from perusing the iiDA Web site, twitter feed, blog, Facebook page, Linkedin group, or pinterest boards, this organization fervently embraces social media as a communication and ideation vehicle. but when it came time to collaborate and plan this issue, we did so the oldschool way: by meeting face to face. on a cold February day, the editorial team congregated—around a board table, no less, with coffees and igadgets in hand—to discuss what was on our minds and in the zeitgeist. A few tropes emerged, among them our ambivalence about technology’s influence on every fiber of our existence (but especially our work life). Most importantly, though, we contemplated how interior designers could better understand their own strengths, their clients’ desires, the subtleties of their professional relationships, and their unique way of thinking and problem solving. Modern life doesn’t permit much time for navel gazing, yet selfenlightenment—i.e. reflecting on what makes design such a powerful cultural force—can spur our best work and make us better advocates for our profession. that’s where this, our annual power of Design issue, comes in. the features and departments herein consider the immense impact that interior design can have on a client’s business as well as the health, safety, wellbeing, and productivity of occupants—a power that comes with a great responsibility. We share some inspiring success stories, including the problemsolving strategies behind three Global iiDA Awards winners. primo orpilla, a neocon keynote speaker, dishes on the radical rethinking of privacy, personalization, and hierarchy that’s reshaped the workplace. the introduction of iiDA’s first book, What Clients Want, inspired a thought piece that touches on what happens when we get in our client’s head and figure out what they didn’t even know that they wanted—and then delivered even more. in our planning meeting, cheryl Durst mentioned that she’s always wanted to “put the prototypical interior designer on the couch, to dissect what makes them a designer.” so we did. And in Mythbusters, four professionals participate in a virtual roundtable to simultaneously dismantle and support the assumption that designers can be all things to all clients. As design professionals, we spend a lot of time—and are very good at—talking to ourselves. but the gospel of design gets spread when we discuss our work in clear, simple, nonjargony language with the uninitiated: our neighbors, our condo associations, our doctors... the more the world at large understands what it is that interiordesign professionals do, the more we’ll be valued for it. And that is what gives us true power. so, get talking.
