IIDA Perspective - Fall/Winter 2013 - 10

Behind the Issue

The French novelist and critic Marcel Proust once said: "The real voyage of discovery
consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."
In this spirit, think back for a moment to where you were 10 years ago. Facebook
was still just an idea on a college campus. If you were one of a handful of people who
owned a Blackberry, you were able to compose and read emails on a monochrome
screen. If your firm was large enough, you may have developed some photo-realistic
computer renderings of projects still in design-though they were almost certainly
done in China, and took days to complete. You might even have put your presentations
together using a slide projector.
Today, the design world looks and operates much differently. New technologies have
transformed the way we create, present and connect with clients-even how long we
tend to work. The practicalities of our industry have changed along with the cultural
environment around us.
This issue's theme is redirect, which, as defined on the very first page of the magazine,
means to change path or direction, or use for a different purpose. Design has emerged
from a tumultuous last five years. Economic uncertainties, the explosion of social
media, and changes in the realities of density, space and population have all greatly
affected the current state of the industry.
In this issue we reveal the results of our happiness survey-an unbiased look at just
how satisfied designers are in the current climate. We hope it will spark a discussion
about what we're doing right as an industry-and what we could be doing better.
We continue that discussion with "Leaning In," a roundtable of women who are
leaders in our field having a frank discussion about today's gender divide. In "Image
Overload," Sascha Wagner looks at the ramifications of social image sharing sites
like Pinterest, and how designers can use these sites to their advantage. With space
now more than ever at a premium, Rebecca Edmunds explores how designers are
transforming traditionally "left over" spaces into meaningful places that highlight
the human experience in "The Spaces In-Between."
As designers, it's once again time to change the way we're thinking about things.
To look at the challenges and landscape of design through a new lense. We couldn't
have predicted the ways design would change in the last ten years. It begs the
question-where is design going in 2014? Where is it going in the next decade?
We look forward to finding out.
