IIDA Perspective - Fall/Winter 2013 - 21

Attendance has been hovering at about 35,000, yes?
Correct. It's been consistent at that number for
several years.
And what's the geographical breakdown
of the audience?
The majority, obviously, is from the Midwest region.
The next-biggest number of attendees is coming from
the East Coast and the West Coast. We also pull from
Texas and the northwest coast, and then we have
a number of international collectors.
Going back to one of our early topics: If design
and the decorative arts are seen by some as lower
on some kind of ladder in the art world, the silver
lining is that they're also seen as more accessible
and affordable. And that's true, yes?
Yes, it is.
It's easier for someone to go to SOFA and have a shot
at being able to afford something than it might be at
a so-called "high-end" art fair, I'm thinking. What's
the range of cost for pieces at SOFA?
Without knowing every gallery's inventory by heart,
I feel very comfortable saying there's a pretty good
percentage of work that's in the under-$5,000 range.
For the majority of the work, the average price point
is $15,000-$25,000. And then maybe 30 to 40 percent
of the work is six figures and above. And that work is
selling. That piece I told you about, that was purchased
by the client who came in with her designer, was a
$325,000 piece.

Another advantage that SOFA has, maybe, is
that some people may be intimidated by the idea
of attending a contemporary art fair. Maybe there's a
subliminal thing in people's heads at a contemporary
art fair, something like, "I don't really understand
what I'm looking at." There's something offputting
about it, which wouldn't be the case at SOFA.
That's right. I do think there are some very esoteric
things going on in some of the work you might find
at an art fair that focuses on two-dimensional work-
versus coming into a fair that has a variety of materials
that you find in everyday life, but that the artists have
now reformed, reshaped, reused in ways that you
haven't seen before.
