The immersive research that went into the Glen Oaks branch
involved in-depth analysis of demographic data provided
by the City of New York and the library system. It's now being
repeated on an even larger scale in a research project on
branch libraries commissioned by the Manhattan think tank
The Architectural League of New York and the Center for an
Urban Future.

"Branch libraries in New York serve a critical social role
beyond just providing books for people," Marble says. "They've
transformed into important social services network points,
providing places for people to take classes, learn how to drive,
all kinds of things, because in some neighborhoods there's
no other place to do it. They're one of the last truly public
institutions in the city, and so we're using this immersive
research and data analysis to communicate to city officials
just how important the libraries really are."

It's clear we've moved beyond programming. Firms are
now interacting with clients in a deeper way than they have
before. Close collaboration with clients and outside experts
is revealing new things about the extent of design's influence
and how it can become even more powerful. Immersive
research is allowing firms to develop and strengthen
specialties and niches within design, and also creating
opportunities for designers to reposition themselves in
the marketplace. Clients are beginning to see how the work
of designers can intersect and overlap with sectors as vast
and different as management consulting and medicine.

Designers aren't going to start replacing doctors or business
analysts, but their clear ability to add value in these fields
bodes well in a business landscape that's become increasingly
competitive in every way. Immersive research has even
revealed ways to connect more closely with the public at large.
At Marble Fairbank's Glen Oaks branch, the team used
demographic data to determine that 28 languages were
spoken in the neighborhood. They then translated a key word
into all those languages and used it to create a unique fret
pattern on the curtain wall. "So if you speak a particular
language," Marble says, "you can walk up to the building
and find your native language right there on the building."
The word, by the way, is search.
