Blake Mourer, AIA, LEED AP, principal at Open
Studio Architecture, says that the technology
community has a unique understanding of how
design can support their workflow. Mourer is
working with local tech incubator Galvanize on
the company's new building. Their new four-story,
78,000-square-foot building, which will open
in early 2015, will also house a rooftop deck and
a restaurant at street level.
"The strategy and planning of the space mirrors the
Galvanize community-simple, agile, unexpected
and eclectic," says Mourer. In June Galvanize got
$18 million in venture capital to expand its 24-week
"gSchool" coding classes, which bodes well for
their future.

"They want to provide the amenities of a modern
office, to keep their workplace competitive and
lucrative to top talent, but also want to create a
different vibe than Google or Facebook," Cavallo
says. "Perhaps they need to be more formal,
or reflect a more local look and feel."
INDUSTRY offers a good example of homegrown
appeal. Its owners describe the space as offering
a "connected sense of community and network
gathering focal points." Being Denver, those focal
points include a beer garden and a ramen shop,
as well as office spaces. "The best way to describe
us?" the owners add. "Like a well-organized
art collection."

Katie Cavallo, IIDA of Shears Adkins Rockmore,
has worked with a number of startups and national
technology firms expanding into the Denver
market. She says that, given the long hours and
intense nature of the startup world, it's not
surprising the community has demonstrated
a unique understanding of the power of design.
"Companies are encouraged by finding ways that
design can illustrate their brand, from a qualitative
spatial aspect," Cavallo says. "People want spaces
that feel good, all day, and spaces they are both
proud of and proud to work in."
She adds that there's a reason many of them are
looking to local designers to help build new spaces.
