TECHNICAL

Software and tools used

This issues design relies entirely on typography
for illustration purposes. From cover to cover, the
layout of the book is designed to enhance the voice
of the publication. Instead of acting as a "Crystal
Goblet," as Beatrice Warde famously called text in
her seminal essay on typography, the typography
and text play off one another adding meaning
and visual interest at a graphic level. The text, just
like the content, is purposeful and intentional,
as we think not about "How should it look?" but
"What must it do?"
The Cover uses the language from a three-command
start of a race to typographically set the theme
for the issue, while the first page starts the race.
Pop Goes The Marketplace opens with a grid of
blank spaces ready to be used for pop-ups. Beyond
Programming visualizes the transformation
discovered through immersive research. Over the
course of the article, the text is reduced, revealing
the important points.

The Serif
by Lucas de Groot
1994
From LucasFonts: The Thesis superfamily was first
published in 1994 as part of the FontFont collection,
and became part of the LucasFonts type library
in 2000. The family was conceived as a versatile
typographic system of ambitious scope. It grew out
of a dissatisfaction with the limited range of good
typefaces available for corporate identity projects.
Thesis aims to fill that gap by providing the user
with three compatible styles - TheSans, TheMix
and TheSerif - in an optically harmonious range of
eight weights, including real italics for each weight.

Atlas Grotesk & Atlas Typewriter
by Kai Bernau, Susana Carvalho and
Christian Schwartz
2012

Perspective
Fall/Winter 2014

From Commercial Type: Atlas was originally
designed as a corporate typeface for Munich Re,
one of the world's largest reinsurance companies.
This typeface deliberately avoided contemporary
trends in corporate type design in favor of the clear,
optimistic tone of Dutch Modernism. The client
produces hundreds of publications, reports, and
other documents each year. They required a new
typeface capable of maintaining clarity in often
complicated typographical situations with a
suitably well-considered range of weights. The new
typeface also had to be economic in setting, saving
space over the previous corporate face and saving
significant amounts of paper in the process.

The new kind of Immersive Research

What a simple thing design programming once was.
Designers found out what a client wanted through
discussions with top level staff and detailed surveys given
to employees. They would examine current facilities and
identify any project constraints. They'd analyze the data
they collected, and end up with a clearly defined scope
of work.

Bureau Grotesk
by David Berlow, Jill Pichotta,
Christian Schwartz, Richard Lipton
1989
From Font Bureau: Bureau Grot is now accepted
as the essence of tooth and character in an English
nineteenth-century sans. The current family
was first developed by David Berlow in 1989 from
original specimens of the grotesques released
by Stephenson Blake in Sheffield. These met with
immediate success at the Tribune Companies
and Newsweek, who had commissioned custom
versions at the behest of Roger Black. Further
weights were designed by Berlow for the launches
of Entertainment Weekly and the Madrid daily
El Sol, bringing the total to twelve styles by 1993.
Jill Pichotta, Christian Schwartz, and Richard
Lipton expanded the styles further, at which
point the family name was shortened to
