Behind the Issue

"Design is about people." It's an oft repeated phrase-so often repeated, it's become
almost jargon, "archispeak," the de facto manifesto wedged into a thousand
branding statements. And yet, when we sat down to plan this issue celebrating
the twenty-year legacy of IIDA, people were the theme we kept coming back to.
What you'll ﬁnd in this issue are human stories. Stories about the leaders in our
industry who are moving design forward, anticipating where we'll go, and acting
as ambassadors for design to other industries and the wider world. We interviewed
six "living legends" on a variety of issues central to the practice of Interior Design.
We spoke with past Presidents of IIDA about the organization's evolution and
development over the last twenty years, examining where the Association has been
and where it's going. We looked at the rise of the millennial in the industry, and how,
coupled with technology and globalization, it's changing the way we work and what
we produce. Even this year's Industry Roundtable focused primarily on people-
how to hire the best talent and maximize their experiences.
At the center of this issue is Metamorphosis 20/20, a timeline that puts the major
accomplishments of the Association in context with the evolution of design and the
major events in culture, society and technology over the last two decades. This too,
is a story about people-it's just as much about the profession, and the process of
design as it is about the work. It's designed as a stand-alone poster piece, a little bit
of Perspective that ﬁts perfectly on your wall. (And if it makes it up there, feel free to
send us a photo or two!) For simplicity and clarity, we chose to look at the evolution
of design by examining a single element, the chair. Why the chair? It's familiar,
accessible, and has a strong legacy all its own-and it's a design element that we
engage with every day and is prevalent in the world of Commercial Interior Design.
An incredible amount of research went into the piece, and special thanks go to
Jonathan Olivares and Kimberly Richter, both of whom contributed their expertise
and invaluable design knowledge. As with any list, it's not exhaustive, and we're
sure to have left off a design or two that would have been a worthy addition. And
so, as we did with our Happiness Survey in the last issue, we invite your participation.
