App Happy
Other firms are using interdisciplinary teams
to explore app development as well. Gensler has
developed a new app in-house called "Poppy Seed,"
(which, for the moment, is only internal), designed
to capture the "authentic" moments and places
in cities. The tagline for the project is "Places create
emotions. Now you can see them." The project
is centered around the idea that the "authentic"
spaces in a city are a collection of "lost gems,"
as Gensler puts it, which need to be documented,
reactivated, and networked.

open

The open source program uses mobile technology,
encouraging users to "plant a seed" whenever
they're in a spot that inspires them. Users can add
photos, jot down memories, and choose from a list
of pre-defined feelings, expressing their emotions
about where they are. Then other users can search
all of the seeds based on emotion and location.
In a Beta test conducted in March of this year,
four of Gensler's offices recruited staff to engage
the program (they had about two hundred
participants), resulting in a wealth of data about
how the participants felt about various places in
Shanghai, Bangalore, San Francisco and Chicago.

Rebecca Cunningham, a Product Manager who
has been at Gensler for two years, says clients are
already asking about the app, trying to determine
the value to their own office space. Cunningham
worked on the user experience portion of the
app development, studying how participants
interacted with the app, as well the design, adding
in Gensler branding to the graphics (she says that
in Europe, people used the app most between 2am
and 3am, when environments were "energized").
With an MBA from University of Missouri-Kansas
City, Cunningham says for her, being a "hybrid
designer" is "totally normal." On the Firmwide
Applications interdisciplinary team, she shifts
from a product management role to a product
designer role with relative ease, noting that Gensler
is moving more and more toward interdisciplinary
teams. "It's an agile method," Cunningham
says, "aimed at leveraging resources to increase
product delivery."
The mobile team begins the week with a meeting
to identify project entry points and prioritize tasks.
Midweek there's a "story telling" meeting where
the team identifies blockers and tries to brainstorm
new ideas. If someone on the team is "ahead of their
velocity" for that week, they'll jump on other
projects, displaying some of that trademark
flexibility managers are looking for. At the end
of the week they have a retrospective meeting,
discuss how the week went, positives and
negatives to the working environment, and how
they can improve going forward.

"It's an open environment which leads to better
performance," Cunningham says.
The hybrid designer may have been a reaction
to a changing workplace and an economy that
demanded increased production, but the role
seems here to stay, having been embraced
by both firms and employees. And, as Cheryl
Durst reminds us, there is room for every type
in the design world: "The workplace is a minicivilization: There are tribal elders, harvesters,
hunter-gatherers. It has culture, community,
conduct, code, a creed, and commerce-all the
building blocks of a civilization."
