LEGACY ISSUE/20TH ANNIVERSARY
Charles Eames once famously said, "Never delegate understanding."
As IIDA reflects on its two-decade history and looks forward to its next 20 years, it
occurs to me that while times, technology, the global landscape and so much of what
we know has changed, the focus of this Association has remained consistent. We're
committed to the people and the practice of design-and a relentless determination
to seek, understand, advance and create a preferred future for Interior Designers.
And their clients.

In this special Anniversary Issue of Perspective, we look back (and forward) as we
talk to past IIDA International Presidents about how the organization has evolved,
and six working "legends" in the industry who have fostered serious growth and
change (note to self-in the Design profession, legends don't rest on laurels, they
keep working, innovating and agitating). We talk to millennials, and a new
generation of much sought-after "hybrid dynamos" who are changing the way the
world thinks about what it means to be a designer. We also take a look back at the
evolution of this organization within the context of a design timeline.
An oft-quoted mantra at IIDA is that "Design is about what happens on the receiving
end." That holds true for associations, as well. Our Members are core to everything
we do and we choose to never delegate or outsource understanding them or the
practice of design.
Charles Eames was truly invoking the inherent and requisite importance of
authenticity in his call to action. Never delegating understanding means a deep
absorption in the meticulous work of any craft. Never lose the fundamentals, nor
the attention to detail. Meaning and relevance matter. So does culture, humanity
and history.
