One of his biggest challenges recently was selling
a client on a 20-foot glassed-in wine room for a
project in St. Petersburg, Florida. "It took a lot of
'Yes we can make a wine room 20-feet tall, yes we
can get a lift to go up and down it,'" Dwight says.
"The client will say 'Have you done this before?' or
'Can you point to a picture to where a 20-foot tall
wine room in a restaurant works?' A lot of times
the answer is no, so you have to convince them
to take that leap with you."
Recruit + Retain
Many firms also endorse company-supported
engagement in outside activities as a way to retain
top talent at minimal cost-especially the coveted
"hybrid dynamo" millennial designer. Large
investments, like creating the gorgeous coastal
residential space that Portland, Oregon-based
Boora Architects offers to its employees, can pay
dividends in terms of company culture and PR.
Boora's vacation retreat is open to employees via
a lottery system, and it also functions as a stylish
calling card for clients.

Other firms have found it helpful to sanction
company trips, with smaller organizations like
Studio Gang decamping for a weekend to the
woods of Wisconsin, and larger outfits like OPN
Architects converging on a city for a two-day
retreat. Kate Beihl, marketing director at OPN, says
her firm has been doing company-wide meetups
for more than two decades, bringing together three
separate offices in Midwest hotspots like Chicago,
St. Louis, and Minneapolis. The sojourns involve
one day of business strategy and a second that's
more about exploration, whether it's touring a local
art museum or teambuilding exercises across
seven acres of property. "Solving puzzles together
is hilarious and wildly fun," Beihl says. "Like any
great trip, you come back with a fresh set of eyes.
What emerges from those retreats is you have
that internal focus and then turn vision outward,
and you have closer relationships certainly than
before you went."
One critical aspect of fostering an environment
that encourages outside activities? Leadership has
to walk the walk, even after work hours. For Griz
Dwight, that means arriving at the office at nine
each morning and leaving at 5:30 on the dot to
