IIDA Perspective - Spring/Summer 2016 - 12

The report explored "The Case for Diversity"
in 10 sections.

1 How diverse is the design industry?
Not very-at least in the traditional sense. The profession
of interior design is, on paper, one of the least racially diverse
professions, with a significant gender imbalance:
2 We are not as diverse as we think we are
Design industry insiders do not consider the field lacking in
diversity. What accounts for this disparity between reality
and perception, between hard fact and subjective impression?
Perhaps attendees' experiences are not reflective of the
industry norm. Perhaps it's denial. Or is it something more
complicated and nuanced? The discussion teased out numerous contributing factors.

69%

of the 87,000
practitioners
in the U.S. are
women*

We have diversity of thought.
The design profession is rich in what's called cognitive
diversity-meaning, a variety of backgrounds, experiences,
and perspectives-and populated with people who think
differently. Many respondents affirmed that the concept is
integral to their definition of diversity-and perhaps the
ingredient most essential to creativity. A recent Fast Company
article reported that millennials consider cognitive diversity
to be the definition of diversity, whereas boomers and Gen
Xers are more likely to think of diversity in terms of race and
gender, and, to a lesser extent, age.

25%
Yet female design
firm leadership
is only

There is absolutely a gender
imbalance at the very top: only 25%
of firm leaders are women.
According to a 2013 study conducted
by Interior Design magazine

We have diversity of skills.
As our organizations become more multidisciplinary, our
teams are increasingly diverse with respect to expertise.
"Post-disciplinary" was the term Edwin Beltran, IIDA, Assoc.
AIA used to describe NBBJ's integration of neuroscientists,
behaviorists, a healthcare futurist, and a former hospital
CEO into the firm's design teams.
We are open-minded.
As a creative industry, design is distinguished by a certain
broad-minded attitude. As Herman Miller's Director of A+D
Programs and Marketing, Alan Almasy, Ind. IIDA, explained,
"The design profession seems extremely open and inclusive
and willing to embrace what makes individuals or groups
unique." We take pride in our welcoming vibe.
We have diversity of ages.
Design firms and manufacturers are consumed and
preoccupied by management issues stemming from another
facet of diversity: demographics. Mark Shannon, Ind. IIDA,
Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Crossville,
cited figures from a recent Economist report, saying "When
asked what workforce characteristics will require the greatest
change in human resources strategies over the next three
years, more than half point to conflicting values across
a multigenerational workforce. This is shaping my view
of diversity."
