Ultimately, Ashfield's team designed the spectator entrance
and circulation spaces to be totally black, contrasting with
the white exterior form and focusing attention toward the
theatrical lighting and bright color palette of the seating
arena. Artist Sophie Smallhorn then developed a color scheme
for the venue with her highly secretive "Wrap" installation.
The design infused color into the glass balustrades, and
juxtaposed them with a series of colorful temporary canvas
panels installed around the interior periphery of the stadium.
During the day, sunlight passing between the façade panels
hit the glass and sent sparkles of color moving across the
dark surfaces. At night, theatrical lights were programmed
to cycle through the color spectrum, reflecting off the white
façade panels and casting the glow outwards to the
surrounding park.
There's an artisan touch to the Rio games, though not
necessarily telegraphed on such a grand scale. Visit the
residences of the Olympic Village and you'll find handmade
cushions on which athletes can rest. More than 30 million
items have been sourced locally, including many interior
pieces. As part of a competition engineered by the Rio 2016
organizing committee, 22,000 hand-crafted cushions were
produced by seamstresses from Brazil for the athletes'
and media villages. "They display our pride in Brazilian
craftsmanship as well as give women an economic
opportunity that would not have been possible without
the Games," says Sabrina Porcher, legacy and engagement
specialist for Rio 2016.

Expect to see muted uses of wood throughout the Rio venues,
designed to contrast with the vibrant orange and green that
are part of the 2016 Olympic logo. Joao Pedro Beckheuser,
whose firm BLAC Architects designed the Velodrome, says that
works well for his firm. "We work with very simple materials,
so I think Rio will be a new benchmark for the more simple
designs," says Beckheuser.
In BLAC's Velodrome, that simplicity is expressed in a steel
roof, and concrete and brick walls; though the seats gradually
transition from white to green to make a visual impact.
Backheuser says this echoes Brazilian architecture in general,
where the structure is part of the design. "It's not that you
make a structure and put something over it that transforms it.
The shape is a direct response to the structure that is used
to build it."
The minimalism is also an effort to show economy of design
and materials, a wise move from a PR standpoint. "We never
shy away from using a bit of painted plywood or showing
the joints of a scaffold structure," says Wright, whose firm is
heading up design of the largest indoor arena at the Rio
Olympic Park for boxing, taekwondo, and judo. "It's important
to convey the sustainable story so people understand why
we are using a temporary venue."
