IIDA Perspective - Spring/Summer 2016 - 5

From IIDA

Design, at its purest, is democratic. As designers, we affect the well-being of
those who move in and through the built environment, creating the best possible
experience for all people. But while design may be democratic with clarity of
purpose and the best of intentions, politics can make the most magnanimous
cause a bit murky.

Most of us immediately equate politics with government, but politics play into
every part of our lives: from interpersonal relationships, workplace culture and
conflict, and the regulations that rule our industry, there is no escaping politics.
And maybe we shouldn't try. Instead, in this issue of Perspective, we examine
politics anew-through a wide-angle lens that captures everything from how
design thinking can improve democracy to the delicate issues surrounding
the work we do to the opportunities as well as the ramifications of transparency.
It's impossible to broach politics at this moment without acknowledging the U.S.
presidential election (murky doesn't even begin to describe that process). With
primary season coming to a close, Americans are already experiencing "election
fatigue." But it's critical that citizens participate in the election, even though
historically many don't. Could design thinking help get out the vote? A handful
of designers and government officials think so-read about their efforts in Can
Design Rock the Vote? Regardless of political affi liation, we can agree it's an idea
worth exploring.
Beyond the election, this issue dives into the politics that surround winning
and executing a major design project, using one of the biggest to illustrate
the process-the Olympics. And, we put the often fraught subject of office politics
under the microscope with a group of industry professionals who participated
in a frank discussion about navigating the unspoken rules of the workplace and
how Millennials are changing the game.
That's not the only change Millennials are affecting-this generation is
demanding transparency when it comes to ethical and social responsibilities.
It's an important step, and with the new B Corp designation, firms can leverage
transparency and show clients how they "walk the walk." Find out how in this
issue's Designer Dialogue.
Finally, the IIDA Industry Roundtable Report covers a politically charged issue-
diversity. Design considers itself to be a diverse industry, but are we really? IIDA has
launched a diversity initiative, starting with an action plan and a diversity pledge,
which your firm can adopt. It's time to push past the politics and preconceived
notions and demand more diversity in design.
So what's the upshot? Politics are a powerful tool, and designers are well-equipped
to use that power for good. We challenge you, as you consider the myriad angles
presented, to embrace politics-to change the conversation, change the rules,
change the built environment, and ultimately, change the world.
