"What was interesting is that we learned that Muslim
women and seniors who are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s
share a standard of modesty when changing clothes in
public places," Frontini says. "That standard is totally
at odds with the standards that a Canadian-born,
19-year-old male jock has. But we needed to design a
space that worked for both standards and a range of
sensitivities in between."
One solution was to create cabana-like changing
rooms. They offer complete privacy for an individual while
occupying a small space-meaning men or women of all ages
and religions can comfortably use the same facilities.
"If someone goes to a public space and spends
their whole time thinking, 'There's nowhere for me
to change where I'm not exposing myself,' that
accentuates the difference between one person and
another," he says. "If we make changing easy for them,
the people who use that space can then focus on what
they have in common instead."
Insider Knowledge
Going in armed with a thorough understanding of the
community-both the good and bad-can only fuel
better design.
"Designers should be well aware of the forces that may
be dividing or uniting the local communities, especially if
there are many interested parties and stakeholders involved
with the site," says Ludo Campbell-Reid, design champion
and general manager for the Auckland Council's Design
Office in New Zealand.
Like many communities around the world, Auckland
has been undergoing an urban renaissance, spurred by
a buoyant economy, inward investment, tourism, and
migration. The city has been working to balance the
needs of the new arrivals with those of longtime residents,
which is the key to creating inclusive, livable, and
welcoming communities.
The council knew all of those voices had to be heard
before it could begin work on a space devoted to the
development of young, local artists and musicians. So the
council surveyed local artists and community members
at nearly every step until the final structure, known as
Te Oro, was completed in the town center in mid-2015.
Those surveyed were asked what they wanted the building
to look like, what it should be used for in addition to an
arts center, and even what it should be named.
Community input didn't end there. Area designers
were commissioned to create some of the center's

Local designers were commissioned to create key pieces of the Te Oro
community arts building in Auckland, New Zealand. This tukutuku panel,
a distinctive latticework art form of the Ma-ori often used to decorate
meetinghouses, appears in the building's lobby.
