PERSPECTIVE: How is bookstore design evolving?

Recently the bookstore industry has become hot, and more
designers are approaching it as a brand-new form. It's not merely a place for
selling walls and walls of books. It's also a place for art and culture. I think
that's a trend that will continue for some time.
That approach seems to resonate from the business point of view.
Yangzhou Zhongshuge-the bookstore we designed in Yangzhou, Jiangsu,
China-was selected as the third most beautiful bookstore in the world
by WIRED magazine. Our client also told us that it generated more than
RMB1.3 million in sales income in its first few months.
LI XIANG:

PERSPECTIVE: In what way does the blend of art and commerce play out in
your designs?

The bookstore's form should bring readers a unique visual
experience: Yangzhou Zhongshuge is meant to evoke a feeling of water.
So we created curved backlit shelves, and the books reflect onto a dark
mirrored floor. The reading table at the center is assembled from several
small tables, and that was a deliberate choice to fit the needs of different
reading groups. The owner plans to host book clubs, conferences, and
meetings, and the design needs to work for that. The kid section looks like
a scene from a story to attract kids to come and stay there, and it allows the
store to hold book activities from time to time.
