IIDA Perspective - Spring 2018 - 38

Gothenburg, Sweden. Manchester,
United Kingdom. Mogadishu,
Somalia. Aztec, New Mexico,
USA. Bangkok, Thailand. Jakarta,
Indonesia. Brussels, Belgium. Las
Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Each of these cities faced a terrorist
attack or mass shooting in 2017.
The acts, and others like them,
occurred at hotels, hospitals, airports,
restaurants, shops, train stations, arenas,
public spaces, and office buildings. They represent
only a small fraction of the more than 1,000 massive
or major, premeditated attacks that occurred last year.
Citizens around the world may feel as if they are living on
alert. For example, 4 in 10 Americans fear being the victim
of a mass shooting, according to an October 2017 Gallup
poll. And 65 percent of British adults under the age of 65
are concerned about a major terrorist attack happening in
their country, according to an Ipsos Global @dvisor poll
from late 2017. This culture of fear is creating heightened
awareness of spatial security, and designers must be willing
and able to embrace that in their work. Safety isn't a
choice-it's a necessity. It's a call to action that makes the
design process more challenging and expands designers'
purpose. They are entrusted with creating spaces that

dazzle visually and functionally, but also deter terror, crime,
or emergency situations.
We asked four experts-a designer, an architect, and
two security specialists-how their projects and processes
are changing in order to address intensifying safety
concerns.

Perspective: How have designers changed the
way they approach security considerations?
NUNZIO DESANTIS, FAIA, FOUNDER,
SENIOR PARTNER, NUNZIO MARC DESANTIS
ARCHITECTS: Security discussions are happening
earlier, and they're more important. We used to feel
very comfortable, for example, giving [hotel guests] the
freedom to just move from one space to the other, but now
we're being very cautious. So we're meeting with security
consultants, access consultants, and pathway consultants
to discuss who gets to move from one area to another and
what the thresholds are for high security, medium security,
and low security.
LYNN BROTMAN, IIDA, NCIDQ, ASSOCIATE
PRINCIPAL, INTERIOR DESIGN GROUP LEADER,
SVIGALS+PARTNERS: It's definitely true that security
consultants are being brought in earlier. When you get
everybody on board at the very beginning, it becomes
a wonderful way of tackling a project. Things have to
