Both brick-and-mortar and digital
retailers are in a constant state of
change, and it's more important than
ever for retail experts-including
designers-to keep up.
"The activity in the brick-and-mortar
retail world seems to contradict
consumer media reporting, which has
been borderline hysterical about a socalled retail apocalypse," says Doug
Hope, GlobalShop founder and vice
president, Emerald Expositions. "There
were actually more new stores opened in
2017 than in 2016, and based on robust
retail sales increases in 2017, the year
ahead looks much more aggressive."
For retail designers looking to build
their brand and create a more effective
retail environment, the 2018 GlobalShop
Trade Show & Conference-which will be
held in Chicago, Illinois, USA in March-
offers unique access to cutting-edge
tools, education, and insights, including:
design:retail CitySCENE Event: Held at
the Game Room at the Chicago Athletic
Association hotel, this networking
event kicks off GlobalShop. It is a great
opportunity to meet new people and
reconnect with old industry friends.
Experience Journey: Located on
the GlobalShop show floor, the 2018
Experience Journey features a line-up
of inspirational immersive activities
that are worth stopping for. Highlights
include Aamsco Lighting's smart mirror
for fitting rooms, Nexmosphere's
interactive action figure shopping
experience, The Trade Group's
chocolate pop-up, and ZenGenius'
interactive visual merchandising
obstacle course.
Kendra Scott: Inspiring Brand Loyalty,
One Store at a Time Presented by
WWD: This keynote address from
Kendra Scott chief marketing officer
Tom Nolan will focus on how the
brand creates retail experiences that
are designed to bring the individual
community into the store while
centering on family, fashion, and
philanthropy.

The IIDA Social Hub: This is the official
spot for attendees to relax, recharge,
and mingle during GlobalShop. IIDA
executive vice president and CEO
Cheryl S. Durst will also be hosting
a discussion in the booth. Check the

The IIDA Product Design Competition:
These awards honor manufacturers
and designers for advancements in
innovation, function, and aesthetics
in product design for the retail
industry. Winners of GlobalShop
2018's competition will be announced
Tuesday, March 27 at 3 p.m. at the IIDA
Social Hub.
Windows of the Magnificent Mile:
In partnership with the Magnificent
Mile Association, this collection of
nearly 20 window displays in stores
including Bloomingdale's, Ulta, and the
Contemporary Museum of Art Store,
will run from the first day of the show
through April.
Educational Sessions: These sessions
will feature speakers from a variety
of backgrounds and organizations,
including Gensler, Sunglass Hut/
Luxottica Retail, IA Interior Architects,
Walmart US, and IHL Group. Topics will
include the influence of Generation Z,
radio frequency identification, the rise
and fall of U.S. malls, and the future of
retail design.
