THE SPY EXPERIENCE
The David Adjaye-designed Spyscape museum is more than just
an homage to espionage. It's an entirely new model for a museum,
according to Architectural Digest-one that "is informed by
technology and designed to prioritize experience."
The 60,000-square-foot (5,574-square-meter) museum, which
opened in February in New York, New York, USA, is made up
of a series of pavilions, each focusing on one of seven unique spy
themes, from encryption to deception to cyberwarfare.
Tech takes center stage in much of the design. For example,
the surveillance pavilion-the museum's centerpiece-is a cylinder
of steel that allows visitors inside to watch a 360-degree video
to complete an interactive challenge, according to Architectural
Digest. And throughout the spaces, visitors use a key fob to
activate different interactive stations, including a lie-detector test
and personality quizzes.

Adjaye.

"Spyscape was an exciting opportunity to explore the interplay
between architecture and multimedia and interactive technology,
which is now integral to successful exhibition design in the 21st
century," Adjaye told Architectural Record.
Skyscape's interior mixes materials like dark concrete, fiber
cement, and marmoleum "to ingeniously twist notions of inside
and outside," according to Surface.
"It felt like an interesting way to flip the relationship of the
building and city, and to create a counternarrative to the existing
glass building, which is all about transparency," Adjaye told
Surface. "Because this is a museum about spying, I was interested
in using design to create a dynamic interplay between the obscured
and the revealed."
