IIDA Perspective - Summer 2018 - 38

The highlight
for me is
being able to
put a smile
on someone's
face.
If I can make
people's
lives nicer
and bring
some joy and
positivity,
then I am
doing
something
for society,
in my way."
-Camille Walala

Dublin,
Ireland-based
Iconic Offices
makes a
maximalist
statement in
the common
spaces of
the offices
it rents with
multilayered
color and
pattern.

Often found in public spaces, her work
expresses the democratic nature of the
maximalist movement. "I want it to be accessible
and not too conceptual or cerebral," she says.
"The highlight for me is being able to put a smile on
someone's face. If I can make people's lives nicer and
bring some joy and positivity, then I am doing something for
society, in my way."
Maximalism is spreading into some unexpected spaces, too,
albeit in varying doses.
Iconic Offices, for example, is making a strong statement with
multilayered color and pattern in many of its flex office spaces that it rents
to customers. And the move is paying off. "The innovative and sometimes
daring design aesthetic definitely works in initially attracting companies to our
brand," says Joe McGinley, founder and CEO of the Dublin, Ireland company.
But this version of maximalism dials it all down a notch with design elements
like the baby-pink booth seating or the street art concentrated in common areas
such as lobbies, kitchens, and event spaces. Private offices are handed over as plain
rooms ready for the occupier's own branding or decor. It pinpoints one difference
between how the movement plays out in workplace versus hospitality design: An assault on
the senses is thrilling, but it also might be exhausting during an eight-hour day in the office.
The all-in maximalist office remains a rare beast.
In high or low doses, maximalism is about creating something experiential, an antidote to
sterile digital lives.
