As for sources of inspiration
in the near future, Ng says that
the current vogue for the colorful,
eclectic, "mix and match" style that
straddles both fashion and interiors
is here to stay for now. Greg
Greg Natale
Natale, a Sydney-based designer,
specifically pinpoints everything
on the red spectrum as being a major point of crossover.
"Red, but feeding into blush, rust, and burgundy," he says.
"Interior designers haven't had that red trend for quite
a long time, and I can definitely see that coming from
designers like Yves Saint Laurent."
To bring things full circle, Natale points to the thick,
pinstriped black and white pants featured in the Versace
autumn/winter 2019 menswear show. First borrowed from
upholstery, Versace's bold pinstripe pattern will soon find
its way back into interiors now that it's had its debut on the
runway. This is often how the design ecosystem operates.

Beyond the Micro Movements
But chasing after the cycle of what's in and what's out
can be hazardous-to more than merely one's style. "The
fashion cycle is maybe half a year long. Design moves
much, much slower," says Ng. Rather than discuss the
latest "it" thing sweeping the runways of London or
Milan, designers from both industries want to talk about
the big challenge that affects both industries: timelessness
and sustainability. "We're designing something to last the
next 15 years. It must not be disposable."
A good example of big-picture thinking is Ultrafabrics, a
