communal spaces in turn. Typically, co-living providers
include additional services and perks, such as fully
furnished units, all-inclusive utilities, hosted events, and
even housekeeping.
Over the next few years, the number of units offered
by major co-living companies in the United States alone is
expected to increase to about 10,000, according to a recent
report by Cushman & Wakefield. As this modern-day
housing model grows in popularity, it's set to upend how we
live, work, and think about neighborhoods and community.
"The most popular cities in this country and around the
world are out of reach for the vast majority of the people,"
says Eli Sokol, senior development manager at Starcity, a
co-living company based in San Francisco. "What co-living
offers is a chance to get your foot in the door."

A Designed Difference
The concept of co-living is anything but new. From
the kibbutz to the dorm to the boarding house, the
typology has existed in many forms throughout history.
But it wasn't until the 19th century that the concept of
single-family homes as we know it-with parents and
their children as the primary residents-really started
to take shape.
"In a lot of older, more urban cities there's
a long history of workforce living formats like
